Any rack rebuilders had good luck...
Guys, in getting many older worn out clunkers road worthy again, I have changed out many racks due to leaking seals . Rebuilt replacements are about 180 bucks exchange. I just received a seal kit from Amazon for under 30 bucks and plan to try my luck at repairing one. Have any of you done this repair and had good or bad luck with the results.....any gotchas to look out for.....thanks...
I've got a 96 civic ex had a leaking rack. Went and snagged a junk rack for $20 bought 2 rebuild kit for $20 each. Rebuilt the junk rack replaced it with my leaking one. Then took my leaking rebuilt it and sold it for $100. Made some money. As far as my "luck" out of a rebuilt rack I've put 20000 miles on it since no leaks, literally steers like it did in 96 when I bought it new. I also did ball joints, A arms and tie rods while I was in there. And as far as difficulty rebuilding the rack, took about an hour to pull out and hour to rebuild and another to put back in. It's really not hard at all and so worth it.
Cool, did not appear to be a big job. Just wondering since most high milage racks have busted rubber shields if the sand and grit would have scratched the bore and the seals would not seat.....gonna do it. If the motor /tranny was out, could you reseal the ends with the rack still in place.....hhhmmmnnn.
Pretty cool.
I rebuilt a rack in school about 15 years ago and since then I've never found a rack rebuild kit available locally, so I just replace em. Same goes for brake calipers, struts/shocks, starters, and alternators... never found readily available repair kits from local auto parts stores, so never bothered doing it.
