Which do you prefer?!?!? d16z6 v.s d16y8?!?!?
wanted to know what yall think about each?!?!?! z6 i kno looks kinda jenky with the dissy off the 88-91 civic crx a6's and y8 straight bolt on..........but overall.........which would u prefer?!?!?!
z6 for turbo
y8 for NA
y8 is newer more compression
z6 is older lower compression problly more KM's
__________________________________________________ _____________________________________
I prefer the rebuilt d16Z6 head with d16y8 intake manifold
This is because i like turbos
if we are talking like the entire engine converted to obd1 and all for sure the d16y8 engine if it is complete just cause its so new

For Turbo: Z6
For all motor: Z6 block (stronger bottom end) + Y8 Head (newer) + Y8 intake manifold (Type R of the d-series).
For Mini me: Y8 head.

get a z6 and put some a6 pistons in there if you are going NA and then use a y8 intake manifold, but most importantly go obd1 and use a p28, you will not regret that

but for mini me u can add the cam of the Z6 into the Y8 since its more aggresive
EDIT: Here are some differences between the engines (courtesy of Katman):
The Z6 head is like a mini version of a B16A head, in terms of the
combustion chamber. The Y8 head is like a mini version of a GSR/P72 head, in
terms of the combustion chamber.(you'll get higher compression with this
head) I've heard from numerous road race/auto-x people that say the Z6 block
is better than the Y8 block in terms of longevity. The Y8 has crappy
crank/rod bearings or something of that nature. Both use the same stock
headgasket which is metal. Not sure about the camshafts...I'm pretty they're
close in spec. But ...Skunk2 is coming out with a SOHC VTEC camshaft, should
be worthy of getting.Valvetrain I believe is the same between the Z6 & Y8
heads.Intake manifolds do differ of course, visually. Although I hear the Z6
manifold is actually
better than the Y8.....but that might be debateable Both Y8/Z6 have the same
transmission gear ratio. The ideal setup with both of these motors is to
actually mix the parts up.Slap the Y8 head on a Z6 block; use the Y8
manifold; use either transmission--although the ideal transmission is the
JDM EG/VTi transmission which is the same exact transmission, but has a
factory LSD (they're kinda hard to locate). Run a lightened f.wheel while
your at it (you can never go wrong with a lightend f.wheel!). Get an
adjustable camsprocket and some worthy aftermarket camshaft and get the ecu
reprogrammed (obd1 is suggested).

do you have any #'s available or dyno sheets ??
very interested about this

very curoius as to what the numbers are like compared to just a y8 or z6 dyno sheet
D16Z6, just because it is OBDI. Use the D16Y8 intake manifold, as you see it is better.
Or just ask Mista Bone, he knows everything about the SOHC motors.

Actually, they're pretty much identical according to Katman. If anything, I'd say the Y8 cam would be more aggressive. Oh, and the Y8 cams are indexed differently than the Z6.

for a head i have to say the y8. high compression is wheres its at. also the distributor will bolt right up off you a6 head

Dude, you guys... The Y8 head is better, for the most part. The Y8 cam is more aggressive than the Z6 cam is - check out these lift specs of the two.
sohc vtec specs
d16z6
primary 35.900 (1.413")
mid (vtec) 38.107 (1.500")
secondary 36.195 (1.425")
exhaust 38.008 (1.496")
d16y8
primary 36.778 (1.448") +.035" at lobe
mid (vtec) 38.274 (1.507") +.007" at lobe
secondary 37.065 (1.459") +.029" at lobe
exhaust 38.008 (1.496") same
One thing that these specs don't mention is the duration of the Y8's VTEC lobe, it's much wider than the Z6. I personaly like the combustion chamber style of the Y8 as well, it's actually more detonation resistant than the Z6's...
There is one drawback of the Y8 head however - the intake ports are designed to create more of a 'swirl' effect instead of higher flow, this is to promote a better air/fuel mixture, which causes better emissions. Even with this flaw, the Y8 puts out 2 more peak HP, and more HP&Torque through out the entire rpm range. A simple port and polish will fix the uneven intake ports, and open up the Y8's true potential. Also, the Y8 intake manifold has been proven to flow better than the Z6.
These are the facts boys. Now you decide for yourself which one to choose. For me, the Y8 head wins hands down. The Y8 block on the other hand... well... it's a POS. Also, the Y8 head seems to handle been revved up to 7800 rpms on a daily basis with no problems, stock internals.
Oh yeah, one more thing. The Y8 head needs the VTEC activation point to be around 5200 rpms, this is due to the wider duration of the VTEC lobe. The Z6 works just fine at about 4600 rpms. That's a pretty big difference.

Good info Mr. Todd.
I know that you said the Y8 should have VTEC activation higher than the Z6, but mine worked just fine!
I guess the best way to sum it up is: both engines have their advantages and disadvantages. Choose the engine that you prefer, since they are very similar indeed. As for the head, I would say pick the Y8. You're right, with a little port work it ownz.

are you willing to go obd-1? I have a z6 block, a6 pistons and rods, z6 head, p28 computer and obd 1 distro. y8 intake manifold, ARP head studs, kamikaze header, B&M fpr, ZEX street/strip cam, iceman hot air intake, y8 head gasket. I calculate my compression ratio to be about 10.6 or 10.7 to 1. My cylinder compression is 225 across the board. Vtec is really noticable and I have torque steer as I spin into third gear. On a back road today i was behind a newer mustang gt, he had an exhaust and I don't know what else. As soon as he saw me come up on him he floored it. I let him get about 100 yards in front of me then I flashed him with my high beams and walked right up his tailpipe from that far back. I used to want a b16 but now i am gonna stay SOHC. My biggest reccomendation is to go obd1, I used to have the pm6 and pg7 with a vafc and obd1 is much better.

obd1 is definately the way to go .........but i heard pm6 zdyne programmed for SOHC VTEC is a clean setup and its satisfied many ppl.........?!?!?
i have the zydne 1 wire and have no problems what so ever. car runs great real good power. but also i have never been in a mini me with odb-1 conversion either.
bascally i have no complaints at all.

no one has mentioned this yet but, people have been butting B series TB on y8 manifolds, its not a clean bolt on but nothing a little modifying can't take care of
