Backfiring and shutting down PLEASE HELP!!
Hey my name is Kevin, I have a 1992 Honda Civic LX that is giving me sooo much trouble. Let's start off by informing you that I am not new to working on Honda's and this is the very first time I have been stumped. My car originally had a D15B7 all original, well the timing belt snapped on it a couple months ago. So I installed an OBD2 D16Y7 long block out of a 97 Civic. I used my original intake manifold, exhaust, wiring harness, and ECU. I also used the distributor that came with the engine OBD2B, but Tach wasn't working. So I know I have done the swap properly, but what happens is it cranks up, runs great other than a little lope from my IACV(which loped on the old motor). Well after about 15 to 30 minutes of running the car starts to backfire and Tach shuts down. I'm losing power to my distributor, hince the backfire. Here is where I am stumped. I have since installed the OBD2A(Big Plug) distributor so that the Tach works properly and used the pin diagram to wire it up correctly. Problem still continued so I then moved to the main relay which is where the power to the coil comes from, replaced it with one out of a salvage yard. After replacing the relay it ran great for a week and a half before doing the same thing again. I then went and bought a new main relay thinking that possibly the one out of the salvage yard just so happened to go bad. Well same problem once again immediately. Any extra knowledge on this crazy problem would be greatlt appreciated Thanks for your help!!!
Instead of throwing parts at it, do some proper diagnostics. Test the spark on all four plugs, and tell us what color it is. Do a dry and wet compression test, and tell us what those numbers are. Test your fuel pressure, and tell us what that is. We can work from there.
While running the Tach shuts down completely which is what cause the backfire. I'm losing fire but I have changed ignition coils too so i know that's not the issue
Do the proper spark diagnostics and voltage tests.
Also test the igniter unit/ICM and inspect the distributor internals. Any CEL codes?

I'll get the right numbers for you guys and get back to you but i know for sure my spark is bright white when firing...like i said too it runs great when running even for the week and a half it was running after the last relay. I have great fuel pressure but will get you accurate readings
Thanks
Thanks
Just wanna Thank everyone for there input I went to do a couple of test and everything came back normal but when I went to pull my ECU I smelled a burnt wire smell so pulled out my chipped ECU and replaced it with factory and everything works great again other than my lope from the IACV but that's next on the List
Thank You Again
