Default Setting the timing

Hi guys, I have a 96 accord 4 cyl vtec auto trans, my issue is my timing is off and needs to be adjusted, my distributor is slotted, someonesaid this is not possible and no adjustment is available, but is clearly slotted 1 inch or so, can someone explain why a 96 has this? thanks,,yes i know how to jump the obd1 serv. port and such, just wondering about the hodge podge of parts on this car, it was brought brand new off the show room floor, i am the 2nd owner and it is all original except the muffler and air filter,

well they were correct. A 96 has crank angle sensors in the dist and another sensor on the crank. The 96+ are not adjustable and are obd2 not obd1.

I will second that. Woody, the manual was wrong (ya, that happens). In 96 the timing is non adjustable and controlled by the ECU.

On Edit I attached the PDF where Honda recanted the adjustability of the timing at the distributor. Scroll down to pg 5

the funny part about that dizzy on the 96 is that it will look like you have nice big slots. Probably bc honda kept using the same cast. However one of the god d** things doesnt have anything but a hole for the bolt haha I went through all of this when I turboed and went back to 0bd1 for tuning purposes. It was a pain. You just need to check your mechanical timing then check the timing with a timing light and the service port bridged under the dash. If you dont jump the port the computer will automatically adjust timing so youll never see the true timing that the belt is set at.

Did you recently change out the timing belt? What makes you think the timing is off?

I recently r n r the transmission, so i removed the dizzy to get to one bolt. when it went back together i could tell it was off, I marked the head and dizzy casting, jumped obd1 port and set it at 15*btdc, runs great now, and YES it is adjustable, it runs great now, thanks I am still unsure on the mix match of dizzy and crank trigger the production date is 9/95

Very true, on to my next issue, that flow master has to go, gonna be checking the pick and pull down the road, there is alot of 5th gens there, i am sure one with a decent exhaust will surface sooner or later, the baffles in the 40 are rusted and flopping around, if it gets above 4500 rpm it changes tone, let off gas and get back on it , it changes tone again, classic rusted flow master, maybe santa will bring me a magna flow or a borla,,,

After some further thought, I think it was possible a few 96s slipped out with some end of the run 95 parts, this is common in G. M. , not sure about Honda, but that would explain a few other odds with this car, thanks.
