Default Z6 head on Y8 shortblock - wiring/swap questions

Hey everyone,

I'm helping a friend with a D series build and i'm not the most knowledgable person when it comes to swapping parts between OBD2 and OBD1.

Chassis: OBD2b Civic
Engine: D16Y8
Head: D16Z6

He is swapping a built Z6 head that I have onto his Y8 shortblock in an OBD2b chassis. What wiring changes (distributor, VTEC solenoid, etc) will be required to make this swap work correctly? I've tried researching it, but the FAQ only details how to do mini-me swaps.

Thanks

if the Y8 manifold and distributor are used there should be no changes required, I believe. the coolant ports are different in shape on the intake side near the distributor so just visually check that the gasket you have will seal to both surfaces (head and manifold).

Z6 has a different distributor flange pattern. You can swap internals though.

Well, right away its going to be on the stock ECU (not sure which that is), but will be converted to OBD1 p28 at some point - boost is in the future.

Adam,

It's already boosted. I'm running an OBD2b-OBD1 ECU conversion harness with Hondata S300 installed in a PR4 ECU currently tuned at 11PSI.

Wouldn't you be able to use the D16Z6 distributor without swapping any internals and just convert the plug

The car is a Canadian Si, meaning it came factory with a D16Y8. Not sure how the models work in the USA, other than the fact that your Si is our SiR and came with a B16A2 I believe.

4drEF - Actually you're right, same thing but different connector and flange. Good call.

right. and if I recall Y8 dist. will fit the Z6 head with two of the three bolts. not ideal but functional. (could be mixing this up with something else... been a while since i've tried)
