The paint will most likely start to peel off if you paint it that way.The edges of the paint where you didnt remove the mounts or the subframe will start to peel.It is going to be twice as hard to get that clean enough to make sure that the paint doesnt start to fail than it would be to remove the motor and trans. You also need to scuff everything you are going to paint because you can't just clean it and spray.

Clear coat helps to protect the base but the problem is imagine putting a piece of paper on a flat surface the putting another one on top of the first one just a little bit further over. The little part that sticks out is where the paint will fail because thats where you didnt remove what you were supposed to and where it will never be prepped for paint so the paint you just finished spraying will start to fail.

ive done this a few times and tried all different ways to complete it as the end result were the same... fair at most.... its hard to get a good sanding in with 70% of the engine bay full.... if your bent on painting your engine bay with the motor in I high suggest you use a good fast drying water based paint and with at least a 4to1 ratio of paint and Acetone...
You can do it but dont expect it to be perfectly clean.... Unless you paint it black that the overspray is not so noticeable. Cutting corners will not produce perfect paintjob. I strongly suggest you take out the engine. You will surely be happy with the result.
Why would you go through all that work and not simply take out the motor? It is a few hours worth of work and would make the project way easier and turn out alot better.
done it many times. paint will not fail if you really power wash and really prep the engine bay and use a good high temp clear.

just take out the motor. i can remove a motor in just a couple hours. Just grab a buddy and some beers and just turn the stereo on and just dont stop till it out. you have to removed literally everything else anyway so youre already gonna have to 3/4 of the way take the motor out anyway.
