Default Gsr cam install.

The head is removed off the block. After I removed the cams, I forgot what position they were in when I removed them.. If the cams get installed incorrectly they will bind up when I crank to start. I don't want that. I backed off the valve lock nuts.. So the cams are all ready to go in, but I need some advise to know what position to put them in the right way to open the valves. Would I refer to the firing order?

What in the world do you mean by "don't know which way to put them"? Each cam only goes one way. If you actually looked at the cams you will see they only go one way and are different cams...

I'm sure sure I can't just lay the cams in and torque down the caps.

I understand. My problem is when I put my cams in place the lobes kinda touch the rockers and don't seat in properly for the caps to fully seat, meaning I must of accidentally turned the cams off about a tooth or two from tdc when removing them. So when the cams seat good in place decent, the tdc marks are off a tad bit... SO.. Do I just install them off a bit then once the caps are on and torqued just turn them counter clockwise till tdc marks line up?

Also, I'm doing this with the head off.

It's normal for the cam to open some of the valves when installing them. It's pointless to installing the cams or worrying about timing them with the head off the car. You have to remove them to put the head on.

Omg wtf was I thinking! I got so excited to put this thing together that I spaced out and forgot about the head bolts under the cams. Thanks man, that just saved me unnecessary time.

But when I do get head on block. With the markings on tdc, the cams will still not seat in the head fully, meaning the caps won't seat fully... How should I go about that? Just put them in off a bit, torque down, then mark them up?

Yes, that is a summary of exactly what you do.... Lube cams and journals, set cams in place, clock for correct timing mark position, set cam caps and rails on, start bolts by hand while alternating positions snug all caps down, and torque to spec. It is really THAT simple... You REALLY should purchase a repair manual.

Its a good idea to rotate the crank so all the pistons are midway in the bore. Drop your cams in, torque properly and in the correct sequence, time everything, and set your valve lash. Get a service manual. Everything you need to know is there.
Don't rush things. Especially if it's your first build. Its easy to miss something or install something incorrectly and ruin the entire engine. Good luck!
