Default 91 ef which head to use

I bought a 91 EF sedan as a non runner, it turns out the can snapped in the first journal and took out the head. So my question is what head should I put on? I'm going to pick a part to get it. I'm also in California so I need it to be able to pass smog. Which brings me to another question, will the mpfi swap pass california smog?

Thanks for any help

It technically won't pass visual. Take that with a grain of salt, most won't even realize what has been changed or pay much attention at all but now you know it's technically not legal.

Any 88-95 SOHC D non VTEC 16valve head will work as they are all the same general casting. Use an appropriate camshaft and you'll be golden.

And if you want, any 88-00 SOHC head will work but some may require slight modifications and/or use of different parts.

I would suggest a d16y7 head from any 96-00 civic dx or lx. There quite abundant in any salvage yard and they use a mls head gasket so you won't spend time scraping a gasket off a pre-96 or nonvtec car, they would likely have slightly lesser miles on them then an older head also. Best bang for your buck as a replacement. Only requires using the y7 timing belt which should be replaced anyways and reusing your 1.5 cam gear.

Just pull any 88-91 civic head they are all identical only the civic si has a different cam gear simply remove the gear and install yours and get the head shaved before install and your set. I recommend getting arp head studs and using a 4 layer steel headgasket. I would also clean the valves and lap them and put new valve stem seals.i live in stockton, ca just a FYI you will pass visual. I did the d 16 a swap into my 4 door with the mpfi. Swap and no said a word not even the dude. He simply checked the code on engine flipped the page and passed me. Since your doing the head there is no visual difference. Except the pm5/6 code no one checks this. Odds are you will find another pm5 before a pm6. My piknpull gets a si once a year and if u r not there same day it shows up glad getting any parts.

That's different though, there wasn't a 1.6 that didn't come MPFI already.

I ended up with a d15b7 head, can I use my d15b2 distributor?
I pulled it from a 89 hatch with dpfi bit the distributor was already gone.
