Default Civic Intermittent Cooling Issue

Hi all,

I'm Keaton and I recently joined the forum after searching and not finding my specific problem. I have a 2000 Civic EX coupe with a D16Y8.

Occasionally (about 1 in 10 drives), the engine temp will start to climb steadily when the car is stopped and idling. I have to rev the engine and force coolant through to get it back down. This problem doesn't seem to be affected by use of the A/C or any other factor.

I replaced the cooling fan relay just to rule it out because it's easy and cheap. Also burped the cooling system to get rid of any air pockets. Did a pressure test and the system held pressure. I'm kinda thinking bad thermostat, but I wanted to see what else it might be before just blindly replacing parts.

When the needle rises are the fans still running?

The water pump was replaced less than a year ago with the timing belt. There isn't any oil in the coolant or vice-versa. No smoke from the exhaust either. I suppose I could do the turkey baster test, but I don't really see the head gasket being the problem.
