Default Cam timing on tall deck dart

I'm having some difficulty here lining up all my cam timing on my dart tall deck build. This is my first time playing with a tall deck so I'm looking for some feedback and want to know if i'm on the right path.

The motor is built for a turbo car, but since most of the deck plate/tall deck builds would be in here(and cause your smarter of course ) i'm hoping you can help.

setup is;

-2.1l dart tall deck b20
-95mm crank
-84.5mm 9.5:1
-skunk2 pro 1's
-b16 head, skunk2 pro valve springs
+0.5mm int and exh valves

My issue is that I cannot line up the cams at 0,0 and the crank at TDC. I have found TDC with both a dial ind and a piston stop so that is correct.

There is a pic of the tooth before TDC and the one after TDC. I played with advancing and retarding just the outer portion of the cam gear(the inner remains untouched technically keeping the cams at 0,0) while the outer is moved to mesh with the belt.

The best setting that I found is -3int and -3 exh. This matches up nicely with TDC and my own marks on the gears.

Is this the right way to go about syncing the cams/crank on this motor? My next step of course is to degree the pro1's. I just want to make sure I'm starting at the right point.

TIA

Well to continue this thread I guess. I spoke with Derek at DDtech and he gave me some pointers on where to start with the gears. Going to just get the cams as close as I can to lining up without changing the gears and then degree the cams from there.

Not sure if this thread is interesting to anyone but I'll report back anyway

Both crank and cam timing should line up if TDC is set up properly. I'd advise you to check it over again as most likely your cam/crank timing is off.

make sure you have the front tensioner set as it would be when running

Thats what I thought as well, as long as I have the right belt they technically should line up. Spoke with Matt at 4piston today and he gave me some more insight. I should be able to get them closer. I'll double check my cam timing, something might be out there.

You need to degree the cams, and the gears are going to land where they land...unlikely to be at 0,0. You can set them up off of centerline, or off of their opening and closing numbers. You can work off of the Skunk2 cam card and those centerlines will work well.

Once you have the cams where they are supposed to be, you need to check piston to valve and valve to valve. Through all this process, you need to rotate over slow and pay close attention that you have valve clearance. People bend valves all the time right when they bolt the cam caps down and the valves pass each other, then when they turn the motor over if they have the cams lined up wrong. Bent valves the first time they turn it over by hand....happens all the time.

Best of luck.

Question

How safe it is to run Pro1s with oversize valves ?

Skunk2 always saws never uses over size

You have to figure out your V2V and your P2V to see what is safe for your motor. I was fine with plus .5mm but each setup is different, valve seat height etc plays a role.

I ended up getting it all degreed in. On the tall deck you just have to get the gears as close as you can to lining up and degree the motor from there. I used a combo of the Web cams and MotoIQ instructions to sort it all out, but once you get rolling its not too hard.

Thanks again for the help!
