Icon3 00 Civic - overheating

I have a 2000 Civic DX that overheated and melted a hole in the overflow reservoir cap. I have not noticed white smoke and no bubbling with radiator cap off. Is this even worth repairing?

Depends how long it was driven while over heated. At the least get a new radiator overflow cap

I don't even see how that is remotely possible.

As the coolant entered the reservoir it melted a hole in the cap. When I figure out how, I will post a pic? Dealership said the radiator is corroded and the thermostat was not operating and caused the issue. The vehicle has 153k miles.

Bullshit. That's what it's job is; to catch hot coolant.

It's my daughters car, except when something needs repair, then it's mine, She states it started "smoking" then stalled out.

So neither you or your daughter perform regular maintenance on your vehicles.

She takes it to the dealership for regular maintenance. Not sure when or if a coolant system flush was done. I guess I have to be more diligent in teaching them how to care for their vehicles, sorry if I ruined your day Marc.

Yes, its worth fixing provided the vehicle doesn't have all sorts of other problems.

even if you have a shop do the work it'l be cheaper than replacing a 6th Gen civic

Bullshit. All this time and the dealer never changed out the thermostat or noticed the radiator was "corroded"?

Still waiting for you to post the pic and stop trolling.

Yeah...I'm skeptical about the overflow cap melting. Its purpose is to accept exceptionally hot coolant boiling over from the radiator. It "catches" this boiling fluid.

Unless the composition of the fluid was incorrect...if it has a chemical that raised the boiling point higher than it was supposed to be.

This is the same troll that starts new identities and posts up situations that are pretty impossible to actually have happen as tech questions. Remember the one where the evap cannister would overflow with coolant when he attempted to add some to the radiator. Same M.O. Claims he'll get a pic posted and never comes back. Probably some knucklehead from GDD.

Yeah it is suspicious that all these implausible sorts of questions are by trial users.

It wouldn't be hard to take a torch or a hot iron to a radiator cap, just sayin'

Sorry. Don't believe the coolant did that. They reason I have a problem believing you is because the whole reservoir is made of the same hi-temp plastic as the cap with the same thickness. So, the damage should have been worse than that IMO. Shouldn't the cap have been deformed with not just a hole in it? That's what usually happens when you start to melt plastic. And all things being equal shouldn't have the bottom of the res melted before the top? It looks like someone held a cigarette lighter to that spot.

I'll have to go with my man shotoutacc0rd for once.

Wait, how does the top have a hole in it but not the bottom? Looks like it's made of the same stuff

Maybe from the heat and pressure from the coolant entering, that's all I can figure. Replacing all the components, hope it works.

Thanks for all your input, ...no really, I ENJOYED IT. Hope your meds kick in soon, Have a Nice Day

It is. The underside of that cap has a nipple to which a hose is attached that directs the hot coolant right down to the bottom of the reservoir first. Actually the nipple itself should have melted before anything, including the cap. Even if the hose were not attached the downward facing nipple still would direct coolant to the bottom of the res. Not melt the cap as it entered the res as the OP is claiming. That's why the bottom of the res should have melted before the raised cap would since it would be the last thing the hot coolant would touch.

Now if this is some rare freak occurrence, then so be it but having to even ask if you should replace defective components is pretty much a no-brainer I would think. But I still think you're trying to punk us. The lengths some people go to.
