Default Weird main bearing scribe

Hey guys,

I went to. Start the rebuild on my d16y8 today and noticed the code for the main bearing are "messed" up. Like someone took a metal scribe and made different letters with them. I was trying to figure out if they were C's or D's but they don't even come close to matching the old block lettering or even where the location of the letters usually are. So I thought maybe it's just a "different" coding iv never seen before.

My question is, what do you guys think?

This is the messed up one

This is the correct one

See, photobucket requires an account, and is blocked at a number of work places. Imgur doesn't, and isn't.

Hopefully someone else can take a look at that for you.

That first one just looks like gibberish. The second one looks like DCCCC.

Given the possibility that someone else fucked with that block at some point, I would definitely strip it down, take it to a machine shop for cleaning and honing, and bring them the crank as well so they can mic for bearing clearances.

I actually let had the first pictured block to the machine shop and cleaned and inspected. I got a a new crank (refurbished) with bearings. I plastiguaged the bearings and they are way off. That's why I was trying to get the block code so I can match if to the new crank. Of course I didn't notice the bad markings until after I spent the money for the block to be honed inspected and cleaned.

I noticed that the 1st block doesn't seem to have the "cut" lines from manufacturing. I'm wondering if maybe it was painted over?...
