I have a friend that has a 1996 Accord automatic with 231,000 miles. Recently trans. starting shifting strangely. They had fluid changed and refilled with Honda trans. fluid back the early part of 2014 to help resolve this and it seemed to help. Two days ago trans. started shifting strangley again and then just stopped pulling in drive or any other forward gear. Still pulls in reverse but it takes a few minutes for that to happen. Fluid is full, clean and doesn't smell burned at all. Note: check engine light has been on for some time even though engine runs great.

 

toss trans install new/used one. can really fix auto trans

 

Find out what the code for the check engine light is for. Driving a car with a CEL, even if it does not appear to be causing drivability issues, can cause damage to other sub systems.

How often was the transmission serviced? If the fluid was only changed once in 231Kmiles then it is most likely the pickup for sump in the transmission is clogged with clutch material. Common issue with high mileage H4As that do not have the fluid regularly serviced.
