i wanted to freshen up the trim going around the outer door window, mine has worn down so it looks like silver metal, and the bottom molding across bottom has just some of that black coating stuff left on it, but its metal underneath, since they are metal, i was thinking about trying out using some of those products that are rubberized spray-paint coatings, sort of like the one on TV called "flex-seal", i have a can of some black rubberized coating in spray, called Plasti-Dip Rubberized Spray Coating, and i read that its good for adhering to metal surfaces, but better if you use their Plasti-Dip Primer spray first to treat the surface, it would look like new since it looks like rubber moldings or trim how they were originally.

i was just wondering if anybody has tried using that type of stuff on anything like moldings or trim and how were the results long term ?

 

don't flex seal your car good god, try some of the mar hyde rubber trim paint that is now back, O reilies has it it was off the market for a few years but was good stuff

 

Why not just buy new trim from Honda..... ? It's really not that expensive at all lol...

 

ok thanks i'll check out that brand mar hyde, for the Plasti-Dip brand spray rubber coating, it does say it adheres well to metal surfaces, but works better if pretreat it first with their primer, also says you can peel the rubber coating off afterwards, but if you do several really thin coats, then it will stick better and not peel off as easily, but i guess if you do 1-2 heavy coats and let dry, then you can peel the whole thing off ? , but if i were using it on the trim, i would'nt want it to be able to peel off at all, and would want it to stay stuck on it good.

 

for a 1990 lollollollollolol? when is the last time you checked the parts catalog for 1990 trim? better yet try to actually order it?

 

yeah, i was assuming it would probably be discontinued ?, i can't afford new trim pieces at the moment anyway, and it i can make them look like new after painting them, which is free, which i don't mind doing.

theres a lot of things i can get new for my car, but i like coming up with ways to do it free myself without having to pay for new parts, plus if i just simply bought new parts for any little problem i had on my car, then i would'nt have anything to do to work on my car, cause its easy to just recieve a new part and just put it on.

i think i like having a list of stuff to do to my car that i can do myself that saves me money from having to buy new or have a shop do for me, and partly why i have a 23 year old car, cause most people don't want to mess with all these small problems on a 23 yr old car and thats why a lot of people rather have a newer car they don't have to do anything to, or they are'nt mechanically inclined and don't know how to do the stuff needed to keep up having an older car.

 

you can restore the trim, us third generation accord guys do this all the time,

 

the way i've done it for a while, even since my 86 hf was just spread thin layer of goop silicone across the trim or molding piece and then put electrical tape over it, lining it up carefully and smoothing it down good, and it worked good enough for me, and lasted a while, did'nt look exactly oem but better than chipped or faded trim pieces, but i just wanted to do it a little better this time.

 

Plastidip it. No need for the primer. Make sure the last coat is WET, dont worry about it running. All of the trim on my car, including the entire front and rear bumpers, is plastidipped black. Looks excellent, easy to touch up, and easy to apply.

 

the original trim is the stainless with the rubber seal bonded to it, then something like plastidip over the rest, I'm not sure what it is but it's harder then the plasti dipped stuff, it might be some form of powdercoating

 

cool thats what i was hoping for, to just hear from someone whos used it and can tell me if it works good or not.

does it work good on plastic as well as metal ?,

do i need to rough up the surface with sandpaper so it has something to stick to better?

so i don't have to get the primer from them necessarily to be able to use it ?


so it won't peel off ? it will stay stuck on it good ? do i just need to do several real thin coats ?

I'm not sure on the plastidip, I used the marhyde trim paint stuff, and it seemed to hold up good, but I suppose you can try plastidip, on the accords I always cut the stuff right under the rubber part, then cleaned it up and recoated it

 

Works great on any surface! No need to sand the surface, just wipe off any dirt or grease and spray it on.

I do one light coat, just barely covering everything
Then a medium coat ensuring complete coverage. Then finish with a very wet coat. The wet coat ensures a smooth and even finish.

 

this is what I used, I tried several things and this seemed to hold up best, O'reilies carries it now.
