Default EM1 Cluster Issues

I just picked up a 99 Civic Si, and it came with some problems in the cluster.

#1: The Speedometer starts at 20mph, which means if I'm idling my speedo reads 20mph, if I'm doing 40 it reads 60, etc. Speedo Sensor?

#2: When my friend bought the car he bought it at 95,000 miles. He told me when the Odometor hit 110,000 miles, It rolled back to 100,000 miles. He sold me the car and I put 1,000 miles on it, and now it reads 101,000miles, but in reality the car has 111,000 miles. Anyway I can jump the milage back up? Would a faulty speedo sensor cause these two problems?

#3: Pretty sure my temperature gauge is useless or is off. after warming up my car, and driving around for at least 30 minutes, the needle sits right below "C" , but once in a while it will jump up to 1/4 then back down to where it was…

The seatbelt / SRS airbag lights were taken out of the cluster because he removed the airbags and swapped the seats and didn't keep his seatbelt buckles

Was the cluster tampered with unproperly? Or do I have some sensor problems.. This car was sold to me by my close friend so he didn't roll back the miles. Please help

With the engine off, key in ON(II), what does the speedometer read?

Have you checked the coolant level in the reservoir and radiator and bled the cooling system?

Was the cluster tampered with unproperly?
Most likely

sounds like someone tried tampering with the gauge cluster at one time possibly tried putting gauge faces on them, took the needles off and damaged the cluster

Most likely
Speedometer reads 20mph in ON(II) mode.
Yes me and my father bled the cooling system and replaced a thermostat with an OEM one

Worst case, a new speedo can be bought at the dealer for not much and replaced in the cluster

I think my first course of action for your cluster is to go to the salvage yard and find your cluster in another car, pull it and buy it for cheap. Then go home and throw it in your car and see if you get the same behavior. If you do, then it's probably not the cluster but some other electrical fubarred items. But more than likely most all your cluster issues will go away.

The only bad part is you can't really safely do anything about the odometer. Seems every time one is messed with, it breaks something.

Clusters are very easy to remove and install, it's just a couple of screws on the cluster itself and a few plugs. The bezel might be a little trickier but your dad should be able to get the screw and clip information for you pretty easily.

Sounds like it's time to pull the old multimeter out. It also sounds like your friend changed out the speedometer because there's no way that it just 'rolled back' unless it's totally possessed. There's a way to fix it without throwing away your mileage. Take the cluster apart and take out the speedo. The circuitry portion on the back of the speedo just pulls off- not many people seem to know this. You can take one from another civic and just put in on there. I'll post a pic after I get off work if you like. As far as your temperature gauge goes- are you totally sure that the car is warming up properly? Are both upper and lower radiator hoses getting hot?

Beat up your friend. Or buy a civic that someone didnt *** with.

or just get a uses cluster for cheap. They go for 100$ on eBay so if you pull it out yourself, like 20$. If you have it pulled out for you, prolly 50ish.

you can switch out the odo, incase the cluster you get has more miles on it. If its less who cares lol, as long as it reads more than your title when/if you sell it.
