2003 engine and how does this effect maintenance?
Hey Guys.
So I bought my first car, a 2002 honda accord ex back in november. The previous owner said they had the engine replaced with a 2003 ulev vtec. How can I tell exactly what engine it is? I need to replace the timing belt, water pump, and I need to adjust the valve clearances as well so that is why I need to know the exact engine so I can look up the correct tutorials on how to service these things. If there is no difference in how these things are serviced between an 02 and 03 accord that would be great to know as well! If it would help if I uploaded some pictures let me know as well
-Thanks in advance for any responses,

The engine should be stamped on the block, f23a1 or f23a4(Ulev) I think. Anyway, go to rockauto, and check a 2002 and 2003 part numbers...both the f23a1 and the f23a4. See if they are the same. If they are, no problems. If not, then the part number will be stamped on the belt/pump whatever. Also, once you know, you can look up the procedure to set the valves.
everything changed between 2002 and 2003 for the accord. well the V6 was still pretty similar but you're talking about the 4cyl. the previous owner must have been mistaken. 2002 was the last year of the F23 engine. check the stamp on the block
Lazlong are you saying that I should be able to tell what engine I have by that bar code next to where you are pointing too? Also there are some numbers/letters painted on but the paint is chipped to much to make them out. So where on the engine block would it's designation be?
Thanks so much for all of the quick responses already guys!

Ok thanks so much everyone! The code stamped is F23A4. So just so I can clarify does this mean the previous owner was mistaken or is this the engine from a 2003 accord? Cause I know the 4 cylinder 2003 accords were had timing chains not belts. And also may I look up the procedure of how to change the timing belt on a 2002 accord or should I search directly for how to change the timing belt on a F23A4 engine?
Also if I am going to replace my timing belt what else should I replace while I am at it? My original plan was to replace the timing belt, water pump, valve cover gasket, and also check and adjust the valve clearance as well. If there is anything else anyone recommends to service while I'm at I would love to hear it

Might want to replace the accessory drive belts at the same time if they look iffy, since you're doing the labor either way.
I have been having trouble finding the power steering belt and the alternator belt. Could some one perhaps be able to link me to these parts please?
