Default Need Help with Electical Problems!! (Ek Hatch)

Sooo heres the problem,
I was driving to work Last night around 7pm with just my dash lights turned on because it wasn't dark yet. Half way to work I decide its dark enough to turn on the headlights. As soon as I flicked them on, the whole car dies. I pulled over and noticed the car was still on. As soon as I tried turning on the lights or even pressing the hazard lights it would bog out and turn off. Even if I pressed the brakes same thing. After a while the car didnt start no more but it would still crank so its not battery. And if I turn the lights on or tap the break it looks as if I turned the ignition to on?? Any ideas what this could be at all???

Is your battery light on? Have you checked the engine grounds? The battery should read about 12 volts, car off. With the car on it should read 14 volts to ensure it is getting a proper charge. Now this for sure sounds like a bad alternator to me.

Thats what everyone was telling me but how does that explain what my brake pedal and lights switches were doing?? If I just barely press the brake pedal to where the brake lights turn on, the car acts as if I turn the ignition to On II. Same with light switch

Is your CEL on? Does it work? Is under-hood fuse #15 blown? You either have a problem with the voltage regulator (built into the alternator), your ELD (built into the fuse box), or a major problem with your wiring.

What your alternator puts out when your car is running is insignificant - what you need to test is what your alternator puts just before your car cuts off.

That would be easy to do if OP had a digital dash mounted voltmeter, like me. Or he would have to use alligator clamps and long *** 16ga wire to run a multimeter into the car with the hood shut.

Sorry about the late reply, I'm working nights... anyway my under hood fuse, #47 I believe, was blown out. I replaced it and everything was fine but it keeps shorting out on me. Any tips on finding the shortage? It happens right when I turn the headlights on

look over the wires and start tracing/looking for a break where they could ground good chance you'll have to un-loom the harness.
