Hey guys first time posting, i just joined the forum. Alright so i am putting an lsv setup into my 89 crx si. I need to get the pesky crank pulley off and i know how hard the bolt that holds it on is to get off. I've tried everything, i heated it then tried to get it off, i've used high torque impacts, i rented the pulley holder tool and tried with breaker bars. I have a sneaking suspicion that someone before me used thread lock when they put it back on. What should i do next with it? Any help is appreciated. thanks.

 

Use the pulley wrench and a breaker bar to make sure the pulley tool wont budge (make the wrench dig into the ground) now get a breaker bar and the biggest damn pipe you can find and extend that breaker bar to 5ft long or more. Then pull with all your weight till you hear a loud BANG.

Yes, the pulley bolt is that hard to take off. Impact grade sockets and extensions are a requirment. Ive even seen the heads of breaker bars explode trying to take the bolt off

 

The only impacts that will work are 3/4" drive and usually the size of a shoebox.

You can try filling a cylinder with air (like leaking down a cylinder) just before TDC and then try to remove the bolt via long breaker bar. You would essentially be trying to compress the air in the chamber and using that resistance to hold the crank in place while you torque the crank bolt off.

I use a 1/2" breaker bar (maybe 1' long) and then use the end of a jack which makes it about 2-3' in length.

 

im gonna have to try something with breaker bars here soon. idk how its this stuck. my crx one was way easier then this. what happens if i cant get it? is there any shops that can deal with it?

 

Any tire place that does tractor-trailer tires should have a 3/4" impact.

 

a decent air compressor and a 1/2" impact will work just fine.

or you can put it gear, have someone hold the breaks and use a breaker bar.

a little heat around the bolt (not on the bolt) will never hurt as well. this is what we usually do and it comes right out with our 1/2" snapon battery impact

 

well i would hold the brakes but its an engine on the stand.

 

Get the pulley removal tool and two big breaker bars.

Thats how I got one off when I had an engine sitting on a furniture mover thing

 

The best way is to use the crank pulley holder with a breaker bar and a pipe around it so that it fits into the ground tight. Then use a 19mm for the bolt and an extension that barely clears the fender. Then jack up a floor jack under the extension so that the extension is at a 180 degree angle to the pulley bolt. Then use another breaker bar(1/2 inch or 3/4 inch) with another metal pipe over it and put the pipe about 90 degrees. Then bounce on the pipe til the bolt breaks free.

The jack directly under the extension that barely clears the fender ensures you get full torque when bouncing on the breaker bar/pipe combo

 

Haha thats exactly how I did it on my car. If you dont out a jack stand under the extension it can really **** up the bolt and youll never get good leverage
