D15 on E85/Ethanol/Alcohol - Any thoughts?
I'm tired of fighting the emissions ****. I'm dreaming of converting my daily driver D15 to run on something like E85. I have a few ideas on where to start but am not 100%. Besides increasing the compression ratio, what other mods do I need to make?... Or ditch shaving the head to a 14:1 ratio and get boost via small turbo... Again; mods? With additional fuel pressure to compensate for the 20% increase in fuel consumption, will the stock system work?... What are your thoughts?
I'm confused. You are tired of emissions yet you want to go forced induction? Those things do not go hand in hand. Usually you will have to buy a turbo kit from a manufacter that has emissions backing. Which is expensive. E85, in my personal opinion, is useless if you aren't using it for some reason. I.E pushing HUGE amounts of boost or HP through extremely high compression ratios. 93 octane pump gas is very good for most builds.
Just another heads up, increasing fuel pressure to compensate for the need of more fuel (switching from regular to E85) is not the right way to go about that. You will see the limits of your injectors very quickly and your fuel pump will not be pleased.
I'd suggest you read some of the FAQs/Stickies in the FI subforum if you are interested.

Sweet - thanks for the tip.
Maybe I need a little more education here. I thought burning Ethanol creates less emissions than gasoline. Am I way off the mark here? Also, I thought a higher cylinder pressure (via boost or upped ratio) is needed to burn Ethanol effectively/efficiently, right?
My reason (yes it's as silly as it sounds); no more emissions testing.
Headed there next - thanks for the info. :-)

I would check your local laws for anything ethanol based. But ethanol has a higher knock threshold than pump gas. Burning it effectively will come down to tuning. There are a lot of rumors and myths about E85. Research it before you get set on it.
If I convert to Ethanol, I can apply for the waver and voila; good bye emissions station.
I'm sure I'm guilty for listening to them. Thanks for the info.
