DOHC ZC trans with factory LSD is IMO the best stock internal cable d-series trans.

I would rather have an open diff than the OEM viscous LSD.

For your set up I would go with a D16 Si trans and add an MFactory LSD if it's in the budget. Only 88 has 21 spline main shaft, 89-91 has 20 spline shaft. You can use the 89-91 trans as long as you change the clutch to 89-91 too. The ZC DOHC models use a larger differential and only will fit with the ZC intermediate shaft and 2 equal length CV shafts. All SOHC USDM models use one long and one short axle (no intermediate shaft). You can use a ZC trans for the shorter gears in a USDM set up as long as you change the differential and axle seals.

These are the 1988-1991 L3/SL3 D Series cable transmissions I have seen... but there may be more.

4 speed: 3.89 ratio

5 speed: HF 2.95 ratio, HF 3.25 ratio, DX 3.72 ratio, DX 3.89 ratio, LX 4.06 ratio, Ex/Si 4.25 ratio

ZC 5 speed: 3.89 FD with close ratio shaft gears, 4.43 FD with USDM spec shaft gears, 4.43 FD with viscous LSD and USDM spec shaft gears.

Tranny guru's both of you!

Aquafina, stop by back on HB some time, trying to get a revival.

Half my GSR trans is filled with Synchrotech stuff!

I agree with both of them, thought we were talking OEM.
