Hey I just bought a 1999 2 door honda civic dx. It has 186,700 miles on it and I just recently had the oil changed on it. The oil place said that my transmission oil needed replacing, radiator fluid, power steering, and break fluid. I take their word for this because all of these fluids were very dirty and black. Now my question is what fluids (brand, type, etc) do you guys recommend I use for each one of these.

I am going to change this all out myself with the help of my moms boyfriend, and I already know to buy the Honda OEM tranny fluid, but what fluids (brand and type) should i use for the others that are best for hondas?

Also when I change the tranny fluid I know not to do a flush, but do I drain and refill once or do it like 2-3 times?

 

Radiator fluid, I've always used Prestone and haven't had any problems. Power steering, transmission, and brake fluid, Honda fluids. They're cheap, and easy to find online.

As for the transmission, if you have a standard transmission, once is fine. If you have an autotragic, 3x3 drain and fill.

 

Honda MTF or 10W-30 oil, just regular peak brand coolant, certified(brand) p/s fluid and motul brake fluid.

 

If OP's car has an automagic transmission, he definitely should not use MTF or 10W30...

Also guys since I just bought it what all do you recommend I go ahead and replace and ugrade? I did oil and will be doing timing belt and water pump along with all those fluids. What else is recommended?

 

by upgrade what do you mean ?

ignition system components ex: plug wires, cap+rotor, plugs.

 

Spark plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. If you're doing the timing belt and water pump, definitely also do the tensioner. It wouldn't hurt to replace your oil pan gasket, front and rear main seals, valve cover gasket, spark plug grommets, cam seal, and distributor o-ring, but those are things you can safely ignore until they start leaking.

You should also replace your fuel filter, and it wouldn't hurt to remove the injectors and send them off somewhere to have them professionally cleaned and serviced.

Replace all of your fluids, the ignition components mentioned, and the fueling components mentioned, and your car could make 40 MPG if you drive it right.
