Default JDM DC2 Aircare Fail

Hi people,
Im hoping someone can shed some light for me, i recently bought an imported JDM DC2 integra, 98 Spec.
3 weeks ago i got it through its BC Out of Province inspection,
My insurance is due at the start of march and ive been told that i need aircare from ICBC (dont get me started on the ins and outs of this).

So i took it to Aircare and it failed Drastically on all three of the BC AirCare Requirements.

Car is completely standard, standard airbox and filter, standard Honda exhaust with CAT and no engine or ECU mods at all. Car has only 144k km's. Car does not burn a drop of oil.

So the readings are like this,

Hydrocarbons (HC) - Max Allowable = 0.3700 Mine = 0.8737
Carbon Monoxide (CO) - Max Allowable = 6.2100 Mine = 11.3631
Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) - Max Allowable = 0.9300 Mine = 1.5114

I checked to see if any fault codes were stored and theres none, the MIL works but is not on to say theres a fault and as i said, the car runs great, good power all through the revrange, no smoke from rear.

Has ANYBODY got any ideas, or how to help or what to do.

Thanks in Advance

Pull the spark plugs and post a pic, of them.

I suspect either your running rich or you need a cat. 94

HC and CO indicate excessive fuel or too little air.

NOX is much too high, as if it were running lean at the same time, that points to the cat. Once you correct the too rich/not enough air problem, you will probably fail NOX miserably.

Mileage? Maintenance? Engine Timing? Thermostat? PCV? Check the basics, and if you doubt them, replace them and keep a record.

Thanks guys,
So i ran it through today again and the results were,
HC - 0.4659 - Fail
CO - 3.3366 - Pass
NOx - 1.2537 - Fail
So if they are compared, they are drastically down. Only thing Ive done was run some methyl hydrate and a good hot engine going in.

Mileage is 144k km's, its had a full service, Thermostat is good, Need to check engine timing and PCV.
One question which has me wondering is, if the cat was out would i throw an engine code up? Bearing in mind the JDM's done have the 16 pin OBD connector, just the jumper wire and MIL light blinks.
Ive checked this and no fault on the ECU.

If i retard the ignition timing would it help?

Oh an my Fuel Mileage is averaging 32 mpg, mixed bag of highway and City so its where it should be.

just had the same problems with my civic with b18c1 swap. passed co and failed for high nox and high hc. my cat was bad. replaced with a oem cat and results dropped dramatically.

if your car is not overheating and your getting good gas mileage the only thing left is a catalytic converter.change it and youll be on your way to passing.

Replace the converter, that is the only reason your NOX can be so high. HC will be scrubbed by the front half of the converter.

The rear O2 sensor can only approximate if the cat is working, it cannot pass or fail you on all gasses, only the presence (or lack of) oxygen.

Hey man, thanks for the reply, im gonna change the CAT for sure this week, one question, does the JDM DC2 98 spec have an o2 sensor in the CAT also? or just one pre cat?

So just for anyone interested, I put a new CAT in the car today and it passed with flying colours.

Results are as follows;

Max allowable HC - 0.3700 MY HC - 0.0226 AVG. HC - 0.0673
Max allowable CO - 6.2100 MY CO - 0.4717 AVG. CO - 2.0952
Max Allowable NOx - 0.9300 MY NOx - 0.0165 AVG. NOx - 0.2698

Compared to the previous results, there is a drastic reduction. I questioned if there was a CAT in it at all.
I haven't noticed any reduction in the car power either with the new CAT, so its all good.
