I have an idea
I was brain storming at work. Would a wrx work rear diff work for our crv and then have our crv awd ? Just need to check if the rear diff ratio would spin at the same rate or could switch out the rear diff to match. Lets everyone brain storm.
If that's what you are after, there are many more options than the wrx. Look into the ford 8.8 irs diff. You can get ring and pinions for those to get any gearing you want.
If you look at the how the wrx diff looks compare to the crv they almost look the same so it might be less work. And weight compared to a diff from a ford. its justed a though out there am not really trying to drop big money i dont have.
I know theres some mods out there to make ours engage more often. you can maybe check into that first and see how much you like that before you drop more money into something else.

I seen that mod it was to engage it quicker. But still going to suffer from being an open diff. For people that like taking the crv offroad i think a diff like the ford or wrx might be nice.
i don't know what kind of offroading you're doing that you don't think the crv's are that capable because i've tried to get mine stuck and i haven't been able to. i would think as long as you could get the correct gear ratio in the suby rear end to match the honda trans then it would be fine once you got it mocked up
I did a slight offroading in my old 1st gen with toyo open country at2 and the thing sucked. One wheel spin and the rest didnt do anything in some little sansy spot while the others were on hard dirt and no i didnt drive fast in that spot. i dont believe much the crvs are much capable offroaders. I could say that my 2 nd gen feels a little more improved then the 1 st gen
You will need to fit a WRX center diff as well, ever driven a proper 4x4 with diff lock? Tried driving it on the road with the diff lock engaged?
It doesnt work because all wheels are turning at the same time so you cant turn very well, it crab walks and ruins your tyres and driveline.

Yeah my old civic had a crazy lsd in it. Why would it need a center diff if you just need the drive shaft from the crv going straight to the rear diff.
Why does a WRX have a center diff? Because it needs it.
My friend has a WRX STi Type R with controllable Center diff, it specifically says that locking the center diff (same as not having one at all) is only for gravel use. Doing it on tarmac WILL destroy the driveline

So how about just using a regular wrx rear diff. Or use what philstubbs said a ford 8.8 irs that would be nice. So who here has won lottery to put hese plan into action lol
What you want to do is this
"system has to be engaged manually once you were on a loose surface because they “locked” the inputs of the front and rear differentials together making turning difficult on high traction surfaces.
