Default Water pump question

91 integra gs

Will coolant spew all over the place when the water pump is removed? Is draining the coolant necessary? Thanks

Yes takin off the water pump will cause coolant to spew out. You don't have to drain the coolant unless your flushing it.

If u got a bad water pump then just take off the bad one and install the new one with water pump gasket maker and torque to specs and add coolant to ur radiator and bleed all the air bubbles out

Drain coolant into clean container, replace pump, put coolant back in, bleed system. 94

The block drain plug is a 19mm head bolt on the front of the block...behind the exhaust manifold.

I find that coolant picks up all kinds of crap as it drains into a clean container from that block drain. You can save the radiator coolant, I guess.

But...last I heard...you can still buy new coolant.

I assumed since he said clean container, the purpose was to reuse the coolant. Why use a clean container every time you drain a fluid? What, does this guy have stock in a container company?

If you're going to do that, just get rid of the old coolant, and put fresh new coolant in. It doesn't make sense to drain it out and then put the old stuff back in. And if it's the amount your concerned about, just measure what you drain, and add new coolant in the same amount. Good luck OP, make sure to do the timing belt too.

Yes I would reuse it.

Why would you not reuse the coolant if it is good, just to spend the money?

Coolant, [antifreeze] is a toxic waste, why add it to the environment if you do not need to? 94

Running your car is also toxic waste. Coolant breaks down over time and becomes less effective. If he's going to replace the water pump he may as well flush the cooling system as well, for that extra peace of mind.

Then that would make it, "not good" right?

Without having to spoon-feed everyone I would assume people would understand not to reuse old coolant and test it before putting it back in, if you work on your own car you should have a coolant tester, they are dirt cheap. 94

^lol. I picked up what you put down. I re used coolant once because it was like a week old Honda coolant. I still wouldn't recommend reusing old coolant. Like I said...it picks up all kinds of interesting stuff on the way out. Plus even if the coolant checks out OK...it might be contaminated from whatever component failed.

That makes sense although i havent ever re-used coolant. A month ago I flushed the coolant in my STi, then had a leak and had to replace the radiator (plastic end tank cracked ) but i probably could have reused the coolant...I always thought that was taboo, like reusing oil or oil filters, so i've always put in new stuff even if the fluid i'm replacing is brand new

Thanks crazyhouse. The coolant is past 30k and will be replaced anyway. One thing though, to bleed it, my teg doesn't have the bleed screw on the pipe. Can I bleed it with the rad cap open instead? thanks

Correct. Bleed it with the radiator cap off if u don't have a bleeder screw. Let the motor run with heat on full blast and let motor run till ur radiator fan comes on about 2-3 times or until u don't see no more air bubbles coming up out the radiator neck.

Parking on an uphill grade or jacking the front of the car up will help with the bleeding. 94
