black grease on fire wall
I pulled one of my drive shafts thinking i might have a bad cv boot with all the black grease building up on my firewall (which I wiped down and cleaned up soon after buying the car)
i checked the cv boot and there doesnt seem to be any tears or cracks
could the grease be coming from the shift linkage or the steering rack?
it ends up all over my fire wall and exhaust where it bubbles and burns off

If it is truly grease and not oil, there is nothing I can think of that could possibly fling grease other than an axle.
Steering rack wouldn't fling anything and shift linkage doesn't have grease.

is it possible that it could be oil to?
First place that s power steering rack usually leaks is at the boots. Power steering fluid wouldn't stay flunked up on anything. That is coming from a cv axle. You just need to find out where. Either there is a tiny hole or possibly coming out the side just slightly.
The boots don't have to be damaged for grease to get thrown out of them. I've had grease come out the ends of the boots before... usually, the big ends, not where they wrap around the shafts.
Definately has to be cv axle grease. I have the same issue everytime either the boots on the axle closest to the tranny get loose and fling grease all over everything on each side or the boot gets torn. There is really nothing else that has a tremendous amount of grease unless you haven't changed oil for a long time and you got some clunky oil leaks somewhere
im just gonna buy a new halfshaft
and sell my old one
i figure a new shaft will run me 60 and i can sell my old one for 30 and a new boot costs 25 it just seems easier to buy a new one
