Default 1998 CRV wont start, doesn't turn over...

My CRV just started having issues last week, it wont start after driving it for a while. For example, I'll go drive for 25 minutes, come back and once in a while after i shut the car off it wont start up again. All i hear is a "click" when i turn the key, the car will not turn over. It doesn't do this every time, only once in a while

I have replaced the starter and all the battery terminals, the battery is fairly new so i haven't tried replacing that yet. Boosting the car does nothing btw

Note: when i turn the key and try to start it an exclamation mark comes up on my dashboard, the same light that comes up when you pull the handbrake

Any ideas?

Check for any codes first. Most auto parts stores will read them for free if you don't have a diagnostic tool available to you. If no codes then it's probably the relay or ignition switch.

Next time it happens, shift to N and see if it works. It could be as simple as the park/neutral safety switch.

This is exactly why I asked. Try that

Also, another thing i forgot to mention was if im having issues with it starting sometimes if i leave it for a few hours and then come back it starts right away. Not sure if this narrows it down or not...

Ok so i took it for a drive (~30min) came back to my place, turned it off and tried to start it and it did the same thing. I should mention that it ONLY does this once the engine has warmed up, its never done it cold.

I tried to start it in neutral without any luck, i managed to get it started a few more times just by using my automatic car start and also by just turning the car off and on. Eventually after about 4-5 starts doing this it stopped starting all together, i took a video of what happens for you guys.

I'm at work now so I can't watch the video but if I understand correctly, you are saying that you can't start it with the key when it's warmed up but it will start with the remote starter?

If that's the case, I can only see it being related to the ignition switch. Strange that it only happens when it's warm though.

its pretty random it seems, when i made that video i had been driving for around 30 mins and then turned the car off. Once the car was off it did not start by turning the key... So i tried using the remote start and it worked after a few tries... After i turned the car off again the remote start did not work but turning the key did.

Sometimes only the key works to turn it on and sometimes only the remote start works to turn it on.

Agree with the ignition switch comment, they had a massive recall on them.

Ah yes, I forgot about the recall. There were a lot of first GEN CR-V's recalled due to bad ignition switches. Worth looking into.
