Default Smog Gurus ... Needing Your Help

95 eg with obd1 gsr swap - bard/refd in cali needs advice on smog

got the notice in the mail - removed all the go fast parts that dont have carb numbers on them. installed oem cat, oem exhaust, oem exhaust manifold, virgin p72, oem intake arm and box. took her to have a go at smog - first time since the nightmare of the ref process....failed of course, dammm.. heres the numbers

first try
----------------co2-------o2---------hc-----------co--------no
15mph ---------14.--------.6 ---------25---------.01------- 2841-------fail
25mph ---------14.5--------.1---------14---------.00---------677------pass

second try

---------------14.1--------.0----------13----------.05-------2360-------fail
----------------14.0-------.3-----------6----------.14--------126-------pass

max allowable #s
15mph 92 .55 716
25mph 57 .54 764

so went home scratched head and dug in.. checked and adjusted timing to dead on, inspected and replaced the spark plugs, removed ALL gasoline in tank, added royal purple fuel system additive, replaced gas with 91 octane chevron- which is what i run daily! cleaned junk off fuel filter.removed and replaced air filter and had another go at smog. this time i drove the car for 35 minutes off freeway speeds or higher to get the cat as hot as possible - im running all oem heatshields on header and cat fyi. pulled in to smogged and smogged it - failed again! both times i passed all visuals, gas cap test, timing check, and whatever the hell he clamped off with needlenose pliers. so basically i am passing everything but the no at 15mph.

i did a seafoam treatment - yeah i know some say yeah its good others disagree. i already did it so i dont want to start a rant on how i shouldnt have blahblahblah... removed and replaced the o2 sensor. now what?? so here's a little review for the people that scan through stuff -

new
o2 sensor
spark plugs gaped at 52
new cat
new air filter
new tranny fluid
coolant has been recently flushed and filled
drain and filled gas tank with 91
oem airbox, cat, headers
fuel system treatment in gas
seafoam through vacuum technique

any other things you can suggest i do before bringing it back for another go?
came home, scratched head a little harder and tried again to figure out what the hell it could be. forgot to mention that my lost motion assemblies are a bit noisy - not sure if that can affect emissions in a negative fashion.thanks for all your help - you guys came through major last time i had this smog episode!

Seems to be running lean - measure the fuel pressure and test the FPR.

I love how they put GROSS POLLUTER in big bold letters haha.
I dont know if you have the ability to get it, BUT I couldn't pass emission a few years back w/ my built GSR. 1:1 mix ratio of premium unleaded to methanol got me zeros.

drop your timing to 14 degrees for the emission test should lower nox a lot.
im in the same boat as you only I failed both for nox. I changed out my 02 sensor cause my old one was fouled and my timing was not at 14 like I thought I had set it. goin to go back Friday.

lambda calculator indicates your a/f ratio is 14.75 :1 so your not running lean.cat might need a longer heat up session or your 02 sensor is lazy.

NO is unburned fuel. The CAT's job is to burn it up.

Also check the ECT sensor, it sends the coolant temp to the ECU. Using a multimeter, test the sensor with the engine cold. Bring to operating temps and check again.

No is nitrogen oxide it's caused by high cyl temp and usually controlled by the egr and converter ,, common cause's advanced ign timing, carbon deposits (high compression) lean air/fuel mixture. Hc hydrocarbons are unburned fuel . Co carbon monoxide is incomplete combustion
is you converter 50 state legal ? and is it a 2 way or 3 way ? carb legal converters are usually at least double the $$ of 49 state version

tested fuel pressure today. vacuum line on pressure held at 38 maybe 39 without vacuum line attached pressure held at 48 to 49. since it was in spec i figure the pressure regulator is functioning properly. i thought long and hard and realised i have never changed my fuel filter id assume 5 plus years so i said wth and installed a new one today.thanks for the input fellas.. im thinkin tomoro ill pull the valve cover and check lash make sure it is within spec.

also got a new pcv valve today, looking for a gallon of meth as i heard it helps..
valve adjustment went fine and sounds a lot less angry.dropped in a bottle of lucas no reducing product. wth it cant hurt anything at this point. in regards to the statement someone made about my ect sensor... i did not test it yet but my temp gauge in the car has always functioned properly since i bought it. newer thermostat, running race radiator dual core, new coolant, watterwetter.

timing is 16 degrees + or - 2 degrees. on your sheet at the top is states your car is at 16. drop it back to 14.it will drop combustion temps and cool your nox readings.
