Default How large turbo's affect torque...

The larger the turbo, the more power it is capable of producing of course. Can someone relate this to the torque as well? I read a thread mentioning the larger the turbo, the lower the torque. Someone please elaborate on this for me so i can learn something new. Thanks

the only way it 'lowers' torque is in the lag time. a bigger turbo flows more cfms for any given psi than a smaller turbo, which means more horse, and more torque anyway you look at it. But, while its not up to full boost yet, it is eating some of your power... hence, turbo lag.

It should cause your torque peak to occur at a higher RPM. It doesn't neccesarily lower the actual torque peak.

yeah overall it will make more torque than a smaller turbo..but a little turbo might be at full boar at 3k while a bigger one is just starting to get going. so in the midrange you probably will have more torque with the smaller turbo than the bigger one..but up top..the bigger one dominates

So during regular city driving, would it be better to have a small or large turbo? On the strip obviously the larger one wins!

Maybe what they meant by that was, with a larger turbo you have more lag time and therefore less area under the torque curve (average power). *shrugs shoulders*

regular city driving you probally want a smaller turbo. Do you honestly want say 2000+whp at like 4K or something though? Personally to save gas (and have better traction), I would prefer to have my boost kick in around the same time as vtec. I opted for a larger turbo. For 1 it'll save gas, for two its easier to control a car that has less horses and torque than one with huge amounts of hp/torque These are just my personal reasons why i chose a 60-1 turbo...

traction? thats what speed ( or gear) based boost controllers are for

So at least in the city, you would get better MPG's with a larger turbo?

well, you'll be getting better mileage since you wont be spooling the turbo and you wont be going fast. that doesn't sound like a good reason to get a large turbo if you're going to be driving in the city.

eduit - but if you're gonna drag race on the weekends then u have a tame city car.
