Default do i really need a catchcan?

so i have a small catchcan connected to the back of the block ports using the prelude fittings. see pic its mounted by the end of the fuel rail. i might have made it kinda small...

well during the warm weather it wouldnt really fill up much but now that its 20 degrees outside its getting lots of condensation and filling up quick with water/oil vapor nastyness.
honestly over the cold winter im in no mood to empty the thing with frequency. do i really need that can or can i just vent through the valve cover nipple and have it be adequate.

motor is a basic lsvtec, pr3 pistons and itr cams it turns right about 240psi on the compression gauge.

a catch can is simply to catch the nastiness so it doesn't end up in your intake pipe or all over the engine. so use it, or don't use it, it's not necessary if you don't mind the sludge going to other places.

you do however have it set up wrong. for starters, the vent on the valvecover needs to either be plugged or have a filter on it. otherwise it sucks dirt dust and other debris into the crankcase anytime you're below half throttle or so.

also, you really should have the iat plug attached to the iat sensor on the #1 runner, not in the intake pipe. in the intake pipe it will read incorrectly and not compensate fuel/ignition delivery properly. it needs to be able to read the iat's as close to the head as possible for accurate compensation. that's why they put the sensor in the runner from the factory, because that's the best and most accurate location for it.

I hope your using 5/8 hose otherwise the can will fill up quick. Too small of a hose will cause the can to actually suck oil out of the motor like a siphon.

well its an old picture the only one i had on my computer but the vavlecover is plugged off. ek's have the iat on the runner from the factory so i put it there again.

i think those prelude fittings use 1/2 inch hose iirc.

You could put a fitting on the bottom your catchcan and one in the black box on the back of the block so that it could drain the oil back down to your oil pan. You also need a filter on the valve cover.

I'm using -8 and having no such problem. Honestly, I'm not collecting much of anything in mine and I'm fine with that.

OP, you should put a filter on the VC or plumb it to your intake pipe. That is a fresh air inlet for the crankcase (even though the can filter can do that job as is)

the valve cover port is plugged, that was just an old pic i had from when i was messing with it one day over the summer.

ill move the iat to the manifold over the weekend.

as for the can, im contemplating plugging the block and opening up that valve cover fitting maybe weld on a -8 or something similar size and make 1 vent fitting from there...

But what size hose are you using? I'm sure it's not 1/2 inch

Run 2 -8 fittings off the valve cover and you will be fine here a site that my buddy runs for fittings.

not really feeling like welding on my powdercoated valvecover, tho i did switch from the back of the block to the valvecover on my turbo car and it cut down the overflow to next to nothing.

and i think -8 is about the same as half inch. i know -6 is 5/16.

im not looking to drain it back. the can is filling up with water from condensation (cold ambient temps and warm engine gasses) and a small amout of oil so its really nasty i dont want it back in my oil pan.

still leaning toward drilling out the nipple on the valvecover and tapping it to accept a larger hose barb. i have time off from work over thanksgiving i might do it then

just so you know, -6 and -8 is the same as 6an and 8an. the terminology actually refers to the actual size in 16th's. IE -6 = 6an = 6/16ths of AN inch, -8 = 8an = 8/16th's of AN inch.
