Just bought this straight body eg hatch and the area where the spare tire is located has rust yes I assume like most hatch owners probably from the taillights or the hatch seals. They are pretty good size holes they are located on the bumper side where all the oem sealant is. I was of course happy bc its not much of a cosmetic thing and wont cost alot to get the rust cut out and a piece of sheet metal welded back in. I was wondering on the cost though since its not really going to be a cosmetic type job the rust doesn't seem brittle so im guessing the surrounding metal is still in pretty good shape. I am going to take a wire brush or sandpaper probably tomorrow on the surrounding metal it seem like only surface rust and then primer to hopefully stop some of the cancer.

 

Sandblast it and see what you have left.

 

I do not really have access to sand blasting equipment. I was think get a drill(with wire brush) and clean it all up really well and go from their. Do you know of a possible primer or rust spray that could so call delay it through the winter until I could get into spring months and then cut out and replace with sheet metal or possibly a pan from a donor car.

I do not know why I did not think of Por 15. My friends fathers old body shop used it all the time has the big shield on the can if i remember right?

You can get a cheap sandblaster for about $20 and rent a compressor pretty cheaply. Anything less than sandblasting just doesn't really work, it'll look good for a little while, but the rust will come back.
