max power on a gt40 and shaft play?
I have a garrett gt488 journal bearing turbo sitting around and I wanna turbo a ap1 s2000. Can this turbo hit 700whp and how is the spool. Its gonna be a stock motor with cams and valvetrain.
Also I was not sure if I need to rebuild it. This turbo has shaftplay in/out and updown but its nothing crazy. The fins don't hit anything. I'm just concerned about the in and out play. Is minimal play acceptable? I know once I add oil in it it'll have less play in it too.

Minimal play is normal, however most turbos don't have thrust bearing play (the in and out movement) This is indicative of thrust bearing wear. Just how small is the in and out play?
Turn the turbo over and fill the drain port with oil and spin the shaft to get the oil in the bearings and then try checking for shaft play again... Most of it should disappear, not as much as when it is being supplied pressurized oil
and don't get alarmed if oil leaks past the seals on the compressor and turbine sides, the seals only seal under pressure

I would hope your doing the nessesary mods to be able to run 700 on the stock S2K motor. The gt4088 maxes out 700-725 according to garrett website
ok so i did add oil. the turbo had a little less shaft play. the in and out play is very minimal. i got a second opinion and he said the same thing. if it was a civic i would have slapped it right on.lol
i just hope i hit my power goals.

Be it a Civic or an S2K. won't matter. The turbo can only compress a certain amount of air, regardless of displacement. The displacement just tells you how it will behave. Expect over 30psi-32psi or more to hit the goal.
