Default B20 - Crack on block

Hi I'm new to the forum and immediately have an unfortunate problem.

I have a built B20b with B16a2 head, was only yesterday where I dropped the engine in and got it started, everything seemed ok.

UNTIL I was doing a visual inspection and noticed a huge amount of oil on the floor, close inspection I noticed oil leaking from the oil pressure switch. The switch was removed and instead tapped an oil line to the head.

My initial thoughts were that it wasn't tight, so I gave it a little and well the line snapped off the block taking about 1/2 an inch of the thread off the block as well as a 1" crack leading onwards.

What's the best way to go about this? I know I will have to remove engine again and I was thinking of just getting the oil line aluminium welded or is there another easier method such as aluminium welding and blocking that section off and using a sandwich plate?

Thanks and appreciated.

heh i did the same thing way back when. i wound up having the hole welded shut and used a sandwich adapter plate. it worked no issues.

12 to13 ftlbs max for whatever u thread into that hole in block. also i believe thats a bspt fitting not npt basically its straight thread not tapered

Many thanks for replying, just wondering did you have the hole weld shut just using aluminium weld or did u thread something into the hole and then have it welded? Reason being half of my thread has snapped onto the oil line.

if you have someone weld on it, be sure to drill a little hole at the end of the crack so when it gets hot from the weld, the crack will not go farther.

BSNPT is still tapered it is not deep as a NPT thread.

Sounds like you got two good answers.

Ok will get onto that, my only question is seen as the oil pressure switch half the threads broken on the block and all i have is a hole, do I buy some sort of 1/8" fitting and weld the hole shut with the fitting or just take the open hole to the welder and have him just fill it shut with aluminium weld? Thanks

This is what mine looks like for a clearer idea of where it's broken from, should i just get it filled and closed shut with weld or stick a bolt/fitting and weld around that?

wow, you did good work!

I tapped mine for NPT size and been fine with some teflon tape.

If you have room, tap the threads for NPT and use a bolt with teflon tape. Use grease on the tap to collect the shavings. Maybe even use a drill to make room where its broken.
