My daughter has a 1995 Del Sol with the 1.5. A few weeks ago it wouldn;t start. I sprayed some ether in the intake and it cranked, then died. To me that indicates a fuel problem. I didn't hear the pump run so I banged on the relay with a screwdriver and the car started. This didn't always work, and I read here that the relay is a common problem, so I replaced the main relay. No change. I replaced the fuel pump. No change.

I tried troubleshooting it today and found no voltage at the fuel pump. However, it is still intermittent. What it's doing now is odd. I turn the key on. If you try to crank it immediately it will turn over until the battery goes dead and never start, but, wait between 2 and 8 seconds and the fuel pump will suddenly run for a second or two, then stop and the CEL goes out. The car will now start. Turn it off and try to restart and it does the same thing - you have to wait for the CEL to go out which is anywhere from 2-10 seconds, then the car starts right up.

I can't find an exact wiring diagram for this car, but the black wire is grounded, the green/yellow wire to the fuel pump is not shorted and has good continuity, I get voltage on the right wires when I turn the key. If I jump a wire from the ignition to the fuel pump the pump runs as soon as I turn the key and the car starts immediately.

Does this sound like the PCM?

 

Clean the ground wire bundle attached to the thermostat housing. If that doesn't fix it try swapping a known good ecu. Capacitors on the ecu circuit board fail intermittently due to moisture. Common with 93-95 civics after 20 years.

 

I cleaned the G101 ground yeterday, as well as splicing in another ground on the harness. I'm going to try to find another ECU. It's ben working fine last night and today, as long as I wat for the CEL to go off. I was wondering if it might be the fuel pressure regulator. My understanding is that the PGM, EU, or whatever Honda calls it, checks for pressure at the rail, then switches on the fuel pump if the pressure is low. Mine acts like it's taking the computer a few seconds to determine it needs pressure.

 

Looks like it may have been moisture in the PCM. The car had been sitting for a while when the problem started and I noticed it was damp around the PCM. Over a few days of driving it the problem went away. I think I'll replace the PCM and make sure it stays dry.

 

To prevent future problems, resolder the main relay.
