Default Oil + Oil Filter

2001 Civic EX Coupe Manual

I have 140k on the engine, not sure when it's last been changed so I'm doing an oil change + filter.

What do you guys recommend? I don't want synthetic.

i advise synthetic simply because it will clean out your motor. 140k is not that much at all. just the usual mobil1 and mobil1 oil filter.

I would say it entirely depends on what type of oil has been used in the system. If you had traditional oil in the system, running synthetic can actually CAUSE damage.

Always conventional oil in it. So what brand oil and oil filter should I get?

I prefer using Honda brand oil filters, just because they're not a bad filter for the price. I wouldn't get hung up on oil brand, as its conventional oil.

Think I'm going Pennzoil....or MotorCraft? Both are in Walmart for $17 for a 5quart jug. MotorCraft is a "Synthetic Blend" if I read correctly.

Or maybe Pennzoil High Mileage? I'm at about 140k.

Ordering the Honda Filter. Pick me an oil!

Both are good oils to go with. Pennzoil high mileage may have an additive in there to prolong wear and tear, but I'm not sure on what effects that may have.

Running synthetic will not cause any damage and may help clean the engine. Could I suggest a read on one of the best oil sites... bobistheoilguy.com . There is a lot of experience and knowledge on this site.

I would like to see his take on the subject, because I've seen what happens to seals that have been in a traditional oil engine get exposed to synthetic first hand.

I go back and forth between synthetic and dino all the time. NEVER had any seal issues. I used to have a 2003 Civic Hybrid until two years ago. I put synthetic 5W20 in one change and put in the same grade dino the next change. It was just my frugal way of keeping the engine clean with synthetic. I sold that car with 300000 km on it and it did not burn a drop of oil or leak a drop of any kind of fluid.

To the OP, don't over think this. Use whatever oil (right grade) and filter that is on sale and in stock. If you don't know the history, get the oil changed.

Putting in fresh oil and filter always trumps brand preference. You can ask 10 people and get 10 different answers. But no one will debate getting the oil changed.

lol people still concluding that high Detergent synthetic oil will ruin seals the Theory being high mileage engine seals are shrunken and being held together with gunk and broken dreams but if thats really the case then using synthetic oil is the least of your worries. op even regular dino juices use detergents in them. as far as filters go i wouldn't use the cheap ones there are quality differences between oil filters which have been covered numerous times on all car forums.

Depending on how the car was taken care of before, That "cleaning" could result in leaks.
