need help on a my civic...new honda owner!
Just bought a my friends civic si (1990). It has a starting problem. When starting up the car it makes a clicking noise from the starter like it wont start have to do it a couple of times so itll start up. Cant be the starter or battery cause those r both new. My buddy says it might be the ground to the starter but idk or it might be draining the battery from some where cause the car starts right up when u jump it with cables. You guys have any clue or suggestions. or maybe had this problem too.
New to the forum. And new to honda. Anything can help Thankx.

I've been out of this for a while but the first thing I would do is check the starter ground and make sure it's not frayed at all, probably even replace it for good measure. Then make sure your battery isn't being drained somehow but sounds more like a starter ground if it will click then eventually fire.

does it make several clicks like a low/dead battery or just a single "click" followed by nothing? if one click, probably the starter but check your ground and connections first
1...check the battery terminals (might be loose or old/corroded)
2...check the power wire on the starter (might not be making a good connection)
3...might need an additional ground wire or two going to the engine/transmission
4...disconnect the signal wire from the starter and while turning the key foward to the start position (with an assistant) check for battery voltage

That might be 'red neck' or backyard advice, but I've gotten several extra months out of a starter doing that.
