Default 1500 rpm Idle after new HG. Checked the obvious culprits.

Ok, I recently bought my 97 civic ex 4dr auto with d16y8 in it. Got done with changing the head gasket, intake gasket, exhaust gasket, valve cover gasket, oil and coolant...

- Car runs good, but it idles at about 1800 when I first start it, and then it will slow down to 1100 or 1200 once warmed a bit.

- If I blip the throttle and let it settle back to idle it will hunt from 1500 - 1800 for a min or so before settleing at 1100-1200

Things I have checked:

- sprayed starting fluid on all vacuum lines. No change in idle.

- Sprayed starting fluid on intake gasket. no change.

- Sprayed starting fluid on throttle body gasket (which is new). No change.

- Pulled throttle body off and thourghly cleaned. No change.

- Pulled IACV off throttle body and cleaned. No change.

- Adjusted throttle cable as it was tight enough that it held the throttle blade open a hair. no change.

- screwed the idle screw in all the way. This is how I got it to idle as low as 1100-1200... Prior to this it was 1800 all the time.

- plugged throttle body with hand. Car ran rough and then died.

- After coolant flush with dishwasher detergent and multiple clear water rinse cycles, drained water and refilled with 50/50 mix of prestone green. parked on a hill with front of car elevated and ran until up to temp while adding coolant mix to radiator as needed. have rechecked this four times now.

I am at a loss here. If the car is in gear it will Idle at 1100 all day long, but put it in park and it will do the hunting thing for a min or so and idle high.

If it ran rough for a bit even a few seconds you have a VAC leak somewhere it's supposed to die as soon as your hand is fully over the bore of the throttle body.

Apparently I didnt check ALL the culprits... Back side drivers side of the intake there is a TINY vac line that I believe runs to the cruise control. Car idles a lot better once I plugged the line back into the intake.

I feel stoopid....
