idle problems - tried everything, pulling hair out
Ive got a OBDII b18b1. (no FITV)
I recently swapped my cams to some Delta regrinds. The basemap I had Phearable prepare was way off. It wouldnt even run car unless over 5k. I put stock ecu back in and it was driveable. Phearable tried again and this one runs better than the stock ecu but is not perfect. I just bought a Hondata s2oo have an appointment with a tuner who has a wideband.
Ever since I put the cams in Ive had a surging idle and the car stalls with the ac on at a stop. I'm not sure if its cam related or a vacuum leak bc I also took the head off during the cam install and had everything disconnected (I tried to swap to a p8r head - mega fail, it had a bent valve).
here is what Ive done to fix the surge
1. replaced IACV with a new used one
2. sprayed 2 cans of starting fluid in attempt to find vacuum leak
3. reset ecu
4. fiddled with throttle cable
5. fiddled with idle screw
6. Bled coolant 4x
7. changed from stock ecu to Phearable chipped ecu with the second try basemap
8. cleaned lots of black tar from throttle body
9. reset ecu again
no luck.
do you think there is a legitimate vacuum leak or is this cam related? Do you think the tuner can address this with a street tune?

Could be a vac leak but more then likely the cams. Take them out till the day of the tune you're not supposed to drive around with aftermarket cams without a tune you can limp it to your tuner or trailer it, that's what I did with my Skunk2 tuner 2 cams. is anything else done to the car mod wise ?
it's running a phearable base map now.
It just has the usual stuff, nothing fancy.
DIY Comptech Icebox style CAI
replica Hytech header
Yonaka cat back

no it ran fine before the cams.
Im actually getting it street tuned tomorrow. he said hed have to inspect the car first to make sure it could handle the tuning process. i told him it runs fine, just the idle is kinda crappy. after messing with it forever it will hold an idle at 900-1000 after it gets warmed up. It just hiccups every now and then and drops to 300, sounds like it wants to stall and then comes back up to 900.

Seafoam it to clean carbon off backside of valves. Changing the cam profile/timing changes how the fuel/air hits the valve inside the port slightly. So I'm basically saying you're fuel is being somewhat absorbed by carbon it doesn't normally hit with the stock cams.

it was the cams. after hooking up the wideband and plugging in the laptop, it took Vic from V-Spec Tuning in Orange Park, FL literally 3 seconds to fix. He then proceeded to give me a street tune for $250. After we got to the location it only took him 30 minutes or so to complete the tune. The guy is awesome. He does basemaps, dyno tunes, sources parts and does mechanic work too. He has been building Honda race cars since 1995. He was really honest and fun to hang out with. He is a local legend in NE Florida. He had really reasonable rates so if you need any work done or a basemap I would give him a call. He also has a profile here. He can be reached at 904-813-4290.
