Default Repair Cost Estimate

Hello,

I backed the car out and accidentally hit the wooden fence. The car is a 2000 Honda Civic. The crack is about 2.5 - 3 inches long, .25 inches wide, and it seems the bumper needs to be reattached (it's not falling off or anything, if you get what I mean but if you look closely it needs to be pulled up). How much do you think it would be to repair this or what are the estimated costs?

Thank you!

800 to 1500... it just a guess... There is no way to give true estimates online w/o looking at it, Knowing what brand paint you would want to use, or even if the bumper is fixable.

Are you serious? a replacement bumper is like $100 :

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-Civic-96-98-Bumper-Cover-Rear-Sedan-Coupe-New-Raw-Unprimed-04715S01A00ZZ-/300900486398?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3ACivic%7CYear%3A1996&hash=item460f110cfe
and you can bring it to any shop to have it primed and spray painted.... I doubt all that comes up to $500 let alone $800 !!

OP: your bumper is cracked...replace it its just a plastic cover

Would it be cheaper to replace the bumper with a new one and have the shop repaint it than for a shop to re-weld the crack? Would it cost no more than $400?

First off that ebay bumper isnt going to fit correctly, is it CAPA certified? Have you painted before, specially raw plastic? The materials alone would be 300-400 and I am talking about doing this correctly and not using some cheap crap that fails in a year or two.

well ok here is a primered bumper:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Rear-Bumper-Cover-Absorber-Primed-Auto-Body-Collision-Repair-Kit-2-pieces-/370883440961?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3AHonda%7CModel%3ACivic%7CYear%3A1996&hash=item565a603141&vxp=mtr
FWIW I installed a non CAPA certified primed bumper from another ebay vendor and it fit perfectly as far as I can tell and certainly looks a lot better than a cracked bumper, and I am pretty sure no one is going to spend $800+ to fix a bumper on car that is worth $2k or less.

OP: the bumper is plastic, not sure how you would weld plastic if that is even possible. I am guessing you just want your bumper to look OK and not cracked right?. after buying the bumper bring the bumper to a production shop to do the spray.

ANother experience I had using non CAPA parts from the same vendor:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/96-98-Honda-Civic-Headlights-Headlamps-Pair-Set-Left-Lh-Right-Rh-Combo-/300844629343?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3ACivic%7CYear%3A1996&hash=item460bbcbd5f
The lights fit perfectly and came with the necessary adjustment levelers and I checked the headlamp alignment as per service manual.

If this was an insurance claim, I can see a rationale for insisting on CAPA, but to just make a blanket statement saying its Non CAPA, therefore it wont fit is biased......

As for paint, not everyone is looking for showcar quality, and it is possible to find production shops who will spray a bumper that wont fail in a year or two for less than $800.

THe odds of it fitting correctly is low and might need to e modified. You dont weld plastic anymore, we use Lord Fuser or like materials. Just to refinish a bumper n my shop is about 600-700 dependng on materials. There is prep time on bumpers too, if they used a aheasion promoter and prep the bumper correctly forthe primer, then it has to be sealed, based coated, then clear coated, then wet sanded and buffed.

yeah, I would tell him if he wants to save cost and I dont see why not seeing this is an old car and it is just a bumper which is very likely to be abused again, I would go scuff and single stage, skip the wet sand and buffing, if it has some orange peel so be it. with that amount of work I can see $400 being a fair price. It may not be perfect but it sure beats a cracked bumper and single stage is pretty hardy.
