Icon3 Swapping in a new engine

I have got myself a 2003 Honda civic dx, it currently has the d17a1 motor in it, im looking to replace the motor with ether a d17a2 for the vtec or to put in the k20a3, I would rather get the k20 because it has a lot more power but I have no idea how hard the swap would be. any recommendations? I will take any info I can get!!

if you really want to do a k, you do not want an a3.

A. You do not need to swap the entire engine just for VTEC. Read the following..
VTEC Head Swap: Link
B. As noted, you do not want to use an A3. There are better k-options available. As far as what you're looking forward to, read the following.
K-Series Engine Swap: Link
Both links are from the FAQ's page, which you're supposed to read before creating a thread.

Good luck with it.

I recently replaced the entire engine on my DX due to failure and I got a JDM one, everything is bolt-on but you do need a VTEC Controller of some sort, or you can do a K Swap but you will need the entire subframe from an RSX and Engine mounts (for the swap) just the engine mounts are about $500, is it worth it? depends what you wan from the car, my entire swap including the Apexi Neo cost me about $900

Seriously?

I tell you what. DON'T take my word for it. Buy an EX exhaust for your DX and you'll find out for yourself. You should also specify what you're referring to when you say "exhaust."

Make sure you update your thread after you're done.

Sorry to hurt your feelings bud, but I like opinions from more then one person. everyone has a different aspect of the situation. some people may even know how to make it work you never know

What are peoples opinions on what engine to swap into my car, I want vtec in it for sure, but I want the most power stock, and also a easy install.

Its not a question of "opinion", guy. Its what DOES work and what DOESN'T work, due to physical limitation. But go ahead... and argue a known fact.

"Easy" is relative. Easy for one, could be very difficult to another. Are you mechanically apt, or new to the automotive world? Because, if you're not familiar with engine swaps... I would say avoid changing engine series, unless you've got a fair amount of time to learn whilst doing the install.

I put the D17A JDM Engine, it is VTEC, originally I did not have another exhaust so my original DX bolts right up, I currently have a Full EX Exhaust and fits as well, as far as the APEXI Neo it is pretty easy to set up, Im not a fan of cutting into the harness so I spent little extra to buy a Boomslang Harness and its a plug and play (no cutting), If you have any other questions let me know

Deffinetly not a mechanic and not familiar with engine swaps, so I may just consider upgrading to a better d series motor so I don't confuse myself too much.

Can I ask how much aprox. what it costed you for the entire swap and everything needed to do it? and also, would I have to change transmission, or will mine work fine with it?

I have the DX 5SPD transmission with the EX engine so if its manual it will be fine, cant say the same for auto as I have no experience with them. The EX does have shorter gears though so technically it will be marginally faster with an EX tranny, I wanted to keep my DX as I like the Lower RPM's and fuel economy while at highway speed

JDM D17A - $500
Apexi Neo - $200 (used)
Boomslang harness - $150
New timing belt + plugs - $80
Total: $930 (price will vary depending on availability of parts and your area)

I did end up putting in a new clutch also, not necessary depending on the condition of yours but might as well since you are already there

Exedy Clutch Kit - $160

Also keep in mind you might need to change other misc parts, engine mounts, belts, you also need fluids, I would have at least $1500 saved up just in case. But the D17A would be most cost effective and easiest to do for a swap, everything is bolt-on
