Intermittent Squeal
Stock 1998 Civic EX coupe with manual transmission.
Starting getting an intermittent squeal a few weeks ago. Seems like it's coming from the transmission and only under load. Tried with clutch in and out at idle and under load but it isn't constant either way. Just a random squeal which occasionally appears in low gears after starts. All belts including timing were changed 10k miles ago along with the water pump.
Suspects are:
Transmission
AC Tensioner Pulley
Unlikely but possible: Steering Pump.
Suggestions/comments please.

I guess it's your alternator strap/belt. If it squeals its going to break soon.

I guess it's your alternator strap/belt. If it squeals its going to break soon.

Squeal was coming from a/c compressor area. I changed out the ac idler pulley and belt was in great shape, but the noise still persisted. Can this type of work be done without having to remove the compressor or lose freon?

Also, after google-ing I found this diagram http://www.tegger.com/hondafaq/tsb/civic/x00-003e.pdf , but when I removed the idler pulley it didn't have two of the washers shown in that diagram. It had the metal guide that is inserted into the pulley and a metal washer that goes between the front of the pulley and the nut.
I'll retention it this Wednesday and hope that's what the problem is. If not it could get expensive.

I tightened the belt to a point where at the 1/2 way point between the idler tension pulley and the compressor pulley the belt can be flipped upwards to 90 degrees horizontal. What is the spec tension?

Tightened the belt down as Ryan suggested and no more issue. Thanks for all the replies
