OK.... So to start off lets give some background

I have a B18C1 in a 93hatch, nothing done to the block just OEM, I bought it this way with a warped head and didn't drive it until I fixed everything. Well since I was taking it off and had a B16 head that was usable I went ahead and thought id use it instead.

well I have everything together and it runs and drives only thing is that the Vtec wont engage now, I changed the solenoid because I have a Code22 popping up for "vtec pressure solenoid" and a Code7 for "throttle position sensor" took off battery terminal for 5min to try and reset code, but the code will not go away and vtec still wont engage.

would like some input to see what else might be my problem... im new to the Honda scene and this is my first time messing with Vtec...

I DO have a slightly beat up oil pan and have read that it might be my problem messing with the pressure. I AM in the process of getting that fixed as soon as I go get the new pan but I don't understand why vtec would work before with the current pan but not now..

eh really idk because iv never cracked open the bottom of a Honda motor... I can look more later when I get home from work, but id assume not because "supposedly" vtec worked before I swapped the head over to a B16... but im getting a pan for free from my friend anyways I just need to plug the turbo drain hole in it to use it. So I figured might as well change it and if it fixes it then terrific, but if not then at least I have a non dented oil pan.

I just don't know what else it could be if its not that, cus like I said, apparently it worked before the head swap :/

 

is the tps plugged in? does the vtec OP sensor have a ground wire going to a decent location.

 

What ECU are you running?
Is oil getting into the VTEC solenoid at all?

 

Yeah my TPS is plugged in, but idk on that ground wire, am I supposed to run a separate ground wire than whats in the plug? and what should I do on testing that ground. like I said first time with a Honda so Idk really what goes where completely yet.

 

not fully sure on ECU need to look later when im home but im assuming the B18C1 ECU because everything was just swapped over into the car from what I know, only thing iv changed is the head since iv owned it. and yes, solenoid is getting oil or should be, when I took old one off to put the new on oil was coming out so hurried to put new on to keep oil from getting all over motor.

 

Seeing that you have a b16 vs the gsr head I would recommend using the obd1 p30 b16 ecu. Being that the gsr had a different manifold setup with the butterfly valves and the ecu is set up for that, maybe that is what is causing you to not engage vtec on the head? I would def. swap ecus and see if that works. Goodluck

 

^ what he said, or u can try a p28. Also why would you put a b16 head on a stock gsr block(i'm assuming usdm gsr block)? Should of machined the gsr head and reuse that. That combo lowers your compression to around 9.8:1.

 

Thank you that's actually super helpful, I havnt thought of any of that. if the oil pan doesn't fix it this weekend I might actually try that.

 

Why do you not just get the head machined?

 

really I was just kind of antsy in wanting it to be running lol, my gf's car was about done for so I needed it running as quick as possible for something for to drive so we could buy her a new car by trading in my old one

ididnt know that about changing the head over tho so thank you that's something I might need to go back and do, I just didn't have the money to take that head to the shop right away so the B16 was the quickest solution.

Plus he let the car sit with that head and the old milky(looked like melted white chocolate) oil in it for a year before I bought it, got everything else drained/flushed tho so I just need to make sure exactly what all is wrong with that B18 head first.

Upside of things tho when I bought the car I had a B16 head ready so I can still drive the car, and the car came with an unassembled Type R head (unused head)... so when it comes time for the new build (going to anyways just cus of what the motors been through, and not gonna lie its rough around the edges. But is already caged ) I have that type-r head to work with and can build the motor however I want
