Default 97 Accord Speedo, Odometer, Trip Odometer not working

Just got this accord on a trade. it's a 1997. F22A1 Motor, manual transmission. One of the biggest problems I have is that the speedo doesn't work. I use my smart phone to get an approximate speed but it's kind of a pain. I replaced the Transmission Speed Sensor, no luck after an hour or so to do the change.

What the speedo does is bounce to 20mph as soon as the car is switched to on. If it's in gear and at idle it will sometimes bounce between 15 and 20 mph but 99% of the time it does not budge from 20mph.

I read that the Transmission Speed Sensor is a common cause of the speedometer not working but it still is doing the same thing. Are there any other likely causes other than a bad cluster? I really didn't want to have to pull it and swap it but the title is already salvage with odometer discepancy due to a motor and transmission swap without recording the mileage.

Do you ever get a check engine light for the vss? If not i would say the cluster is bad.. Do you have a picture of your vss?

I will have the check engine codes ran again. I had one of those bluetooth code readers for Torque on my phone. Left in my Jeep for 4 months no problems hooked up all the time never unplugged. Leave in in the Accord for 2 days and it kills it. Oh well.

I'll upload a pic of the old compared to new VSS. I don't think it's the sensor though, since just switching the key to on, not even the car running, makes the speedo jump to around 15mph.

I'll get the codes pulled after work and see what it comes up with. I know there were a total of 3 codes last time my bluetooth adapter worked. 2 of them were O2 sensor, likely from the headers-back install and I believe the cat was removed. The other code was a drive-train related code but I didn't take a screenshot of it. When I got the car.

Obviously you can tell the old parts are on the right in the pics, new parts on the left. I replaced the sensor and the little impeller.

after a drive on the highway everything started working until the car was turned off and the key removed. I'm guessing the cluster is indeed bad. :-( that sucks I was hoping it was just a cheap sensor.

It honestly wouldn't bother me so much if the odometer worked. I can use my RPM's to determine close to the speed I'm going in which gear but I like being able to track my miles between fuel ups. Guess I'll call around some salvage yards for a cluster. The title is already an odometer discrepancy for the motor and trans swap so no harm.

Yep junkyard is your best bet unless you want to spent alot of money for one from honda.. Only bad part is i believe this was recalled or at least a tsb was put out about it i can look it up if your really interested.. So you have a high chance of getting one that will fail again.. Supposedly its a problem with the solder joints on the circuit board.. Maybe ill try and fix mine and see what happens if it works ill report back..

I'm going to call the yards tomorrow. There's not a big selection locally but about 40 minutes away there's 5 or 6 yards to choose from. I saw them on eBay was thinking about getting one that route to save on gas. I figured while I'm at it I'll do the reverse glow gauges XD
