Default /sigh. what a way to start the day =(

So I drive from San Bernardino to San diego Ca everyday. 122 miles one way to get to work. Wish i lived closer to base (Navy) but the wife wanted to live closer to home. I was driving to work this morning and my car started to act like it wanted to cut off like losing power and fast. Everything requiring power worked.. lights dash radio etc. but the engine just shut off. I pulled over waited a minute and tried to restart the car and it trys to turn over. sounds very strong like it wants to but is missing something...

The motor is a B16a vtec. i believe a b16a2 but not 100% sure. i've read alot on the main fuel relay which i think might be the problem. it is clicking on or sounds to be, i hear the fuel pump kick on but then when i go to start the car nothing... it cranks but wont start. I checked the spark plugs, had my wife try to start the car while i had a spare spark plug, plugged into the wire. they work. tested all 4 spark plug wires.

This car is a wiring nightmare i will say that. Whatever douche bag wired this thing just guessed it seems. like this was an at home b16 swap with no idea what they were doing. i've spent quite some time chasing wires and getting this old girl to work again and boy is she strong when shes running. just need to figure out this new issue. any help would be greatly appreciated. I do have a Gas guzzling truck i can drive to work so im not technically stranded! also if anyone is in Southern California (inland Empire area) and would like to swing by and maybe take a look at her i am more than willing to pay for gas and maybe some of your time if we can fix this issue.

Well update still no start. I just re-verified I am getting spark and i believe the fuel is getting to the injectors. (reason i believe is when i pulled the spark plug it had a very slight wet tip on it and smelled of fuel. dont know if thats bad or good..looked like just enough that should ignite.) I checked all Fuses under dash and in the engine bay all are good. Everything seems to work as advertised just the engine wont light off... It cranks hard sounds good. sounds like it wants to fire right up but im at a dead end now. im about to head to auto zone and buy a new fuel filter but im pretty darn sure thats not the issue but couldnt hurt to try =/. The fuel pump is working. i pulled the end that goes to the fuel filter and had the wife try to start teh car real quick and about 5 dollars in fuel shot out in 2 seconds lol.

Did you try the ignition rotor yet? Something similar happened to me, and that's what it turned out to be.

check your rotor. also, what codes, if any, are you throwing? pull the carpet back on the passenger side and count the blinks

Maybe a vaccume hose broke. Or your MAP sensor died. Or the crank position sensor died.

I'd look towards the dizzy also, that's what happened to mine, and sounds very similar to what happened to me.

ok brand new dizzy with cap and rotor all new. car ran amazing the dizzy fixed the tach and vtec. With the last one vtec wouldnt kick on and the tach jumped all over the place. however i havent tried the map sensor yet dont even know where that is i can google it though no biggie. the car does try to start.. it cranks hard just wont start. and whats the ignition rotor? is that the rotor in the distributor? if so its brand new.

one there is no carpet lol the car is completely gutted. where can i view these blinks. if there on the cars cpu ill find it. There is no check engine light. its just not showing any codes or that there is trouble.

I just replaced the Main Fuel Relay didn't fix the problem. I then replaced the fuel filter the last one was disgusting probably needed to be changed anyways... didn't solve the problem... not sure what to do next... there are 3 wires on the back side 2 of them connect just above the oil filter and to the side a bit. the last one is just hanging there with a plastic end on it.. kinda squarish round. dont know how to explain it.. cant figure out where it goes...

i was thinking maybe spend another 150 bucks and buy a new distributor just to trouble shoot but this one is igniting. tested 3 different times today to ensure spark and its there.

The two wires are for the radiator fan switch.

The single wire is for the Low oil light in the dash. There should be a little prong on the back of the block to plug it up to. If you cant find it just google oil pressure switch.

Neither of those will cause your problem. Try spraying starter fluid into the throttle body while you're cranking it. If it runs for a sec, then you have a fuel issue, if not then it's a spark/timing issue.

ok i figured it out after replacing main fuel relay switch and fuel filter it was teh first thing i looked at.. yes i know you guys said rotor... well that was the first thing i looked at.. i took of the cap and looked at the rotor but didn't touch it =/ which was my first mistake.. so i spent the entire day tracing wires and trouble shooting everything on the car and continuity testing everything for me to say you know what let me take off this dizzy cap one more time and take a peak... my buddy reached in all quick and turned the thing and im like awww damn that shouldn't spin =( i instantly knew either it was broken or the screw fell out... well the screw fell out. no idea where or how i mean it wasn't in the cap which is the crazy part and i know i put it on cause i drove the car for 2 days after changing the distributor. but went to home depot and bought the screw and some lock tight and lets just say my little monster is alive

i want to thank everyone for there support and comments! ill definitely be around to hopefully answer any ones questions. but remember i am in the Navy and i work long hours but ill make sure to check in after work . I did learn a lot today about this car and fixed a ton of preventative maintenance which is a huge bonus! thanks again guys and im off to bed gotta be up at 2:50 am to be to work on time =/ goodnight
