installing speedo cable?
how hard is this to do? i have a 88 crx dx, the speedo cable snapped after 210k miles....anybody been through this. it looks like it is going to be a bitch. help me please. thanks
no, i mean installing like changing the entire cable. i have to take it out and put a new one through the firewall and everything. i was looking for detail on an easy way to get it fed through the firewall and to the guage cluster without having to take everything apart and fight it too much. thanks though. i know how to get it in the tranny.
I am pretty sure this goes for all crx/civics> I did this on my 90 si.
1st remove the gauge cluster. There are 2 screws on the bottom and 2 on top
1st and half step remove the electrical plug (press tab and pull) also remove the speed plug also remove the grommets on the new cable
1st and 3/4 remove tranny end from tranny there should be a boot and a clip holding it in
2nd cut the old plug off a inch or so down the cable (cluster side)
3rd tape the tranny end of the new cable to the place where you cut.
4th slowly pull the old cable in the bay so that the new cable will come through the fire wall. May need a friend to help guide while you pull or vice versa
5th remove tape and put rubber boot on and push tranny end into the tranny and put in the clip. then slide rubber boot down.
6th push in new cable plug into the cluster and plug in ele connector. Replace mounting screws and covers. Your done.
Its pretty easy let us know if there are any questions or problems. HTH

Where did it break? At the tranny? Pull the cable (inside cable) out of the old cable sheath, take the inside cable out of the new complete cable, lube up the new inside cable and feed THAT into the old cable housing. It is SOOO much easier this way.
Take off the speedo housing and make sure the cable engages, then replace the end into the tranny with the clip. I did mine in all of 10 minutes (snapped at the tranny). Seems like a waste of money for the complete new cable, but it's cheap, easy (no fishing through the firewall), and works (8 months now).

the inside cable snapped like 3 inches up from where it goes in the tranny, like it just kinda fell out when i pulled the cable out to diagnos the problem. it was all rusted nasty. i am going to just buy a whole new cable from honda for $23. i guess i'll figure it out?

It's easy once you see the new cable. It is just a PITA to reroute the entire cable. Mine was pretty rusty too. Pull it/push it out from the inside of the car. It comes out really easily. Push the new inside, well lubed, into the old sheath. Reconnect. Go for a drive. Make sure it works. I'm just too lazy to pull the whole thing out. It's also harder with the B16 in the way
BTW, it kinda sucks buying the new cable and JUST using the inside. Oh well,

GRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!! i have switched oiut the cable, entire thing. yanked the old on out, and ran the new one through the firewall. that was easy. but i can't get the stupid cable to snap down into the tranny for the life of me. i have the little clip that goes on there too. but i have tried to line up the notch on it and everything, it seems to be popped down in real far, but it slips back out with no effort? please help me
also, the 10mm bolt for the "pinion" is that the bolt that is like an inch over towards the drivers side of the car? cuz when i took that bolt out, nothing cae lose, and nothing moved? did i mess something up when i took it off?
it looked like it was just where a bracket of some sort used to be mounted at?
