GSR Starter Issues (Early Engagement)
Just finished dropping in a OBD2 GSR motor into a 98 Integra LS. The motor gets air, fuel, and spark with no leaks (so far), but it won't turn over. First issue is that the starter itself activates on the second tick mark of the ignition switch (not the third and final set like it should). Clearly the next issue is that the starter remains engaged, inhibiting the motor from even getting a chance to turn over. Is it a starter relay or the ignition itself? Don't really know where to begin on this one because the BLK/WHT signal wire is wired correctly all the way to the firewall, and the wiring is untouched behind it. The wiring diagrams in the Haynes manual point towards starter relay A as the main source for controlling the signal, but I'm not quite sure. Need some help. Hopefully someone here has come across something like this, cause this is the first time me or any of my friends have.
Something is miswired, the starter relay gets power, both input, [#30] and coil, [#85] from the ign. switch, black/white, and relay can not energize inless the other side of the coil [#86] gets a ground from the CIS, [clutch interlock switch].
Do you still have to step on CLS for engine to crank, or will it crank without stepping on clutch?
Try this, unplug the starter lead from the starter motor solenoid, turn on the ign. to the "second tick mark", [run position], test the starter lead you unplugged from the starter motor solenoid, if your right it should have power, plugging it back in will crank the engine, [starter motor works], unplug it again, and test for power on the black/white at the ign. switch.
Let me know what you find. 94

Interesting. Thanks a lot for the response. Yea, it does crank without having to press down the clutch at all, and I did try and jump over the signal lead to the power yesterday to see if I could get the car to crank that way. Unfortunately, I lost all power. No spark and the BLK/WHT signal wire doesn't even have current running through it anymore. I guess I can't test your method yet. At first I thought it was the dizzy since I was using a buddy's old one. But I replaced all the internals with a new dizzy I had lying around and gave it a new coil pack, but still nothing. Any advice? Feels like the problem is rooting deeper
Check your main grounds, poor grounding can cause all sorts of strange things to happen.
You need to check the batt. neg.(-) post and ground cable clamp, the batt. to chassis ground and the chassis to engine ground, DO NOT just eyeball the connections, disconnect/clean/reconnect.
On many Honda/Acura the batt. to chassis and chassis to engine grounds are all one cable connected at the batt. and the other end on the engine with the center of the cable clamped to the chassis.
On other Honda/Acura there are two cables, one from the batt. to the chassis and one from the chassis to the engine.
Make sure both the engine and chassis are grounded back to the batt. 94
