99 civic dx - how check timing belt?
just bought a 99 civic dx. i want to do a well inspection myself of the car and have drove it for 2 weeks already with no problems at all beside the transmission being a little grinding, anyways i wanted to open up my timing belt cover tmrw so i know more or less in how long i got to change it. would appreciate the help or TIPS!
true but i have no record on the last change.. i would like to take a look at it because if it is loose i have heard its time to have it replaced or if it looks weared out and small rips in it.
I would just change it then. If you have two cars you can inspect everything first, timing belt water pump, bearings etc.. if you only have one car I would just replace everything and be done in a day.
im no mechanic.. so ill have to find a guy who does an at home job and hope for the best he does not mess up on the timing. i wouldnt trust my self replacing a timing belt + water pump + tensioner

How many miles are on the car? If it's over the first t-belt change mileage but not to the 2nd you could open the valve cover/top timing cover and see what brand of belt it is. If it's not a honda OEM belt then it's been changed at least once. If it is, change it to be sure. You can also look at the teeth to see if there's any wear, but with your timing belt its a critical part so the safest bet is to change it. The hardest part is getting the crank pulley bolt loose. You'll need a foot lb. torque wrench to re-torque it. You'll need an inch lb. torque wrench for the water pump bolts.

I would advise NOT doing your timing belt job unless you have been wrenching on cars for while and have good understanding on how an engine works. ( ignition timing, mechanical timing, interference engine )
There is nothing hard about a timing belt if everything goes just like how the book says. That is almost never the case. Would you know what to do the if the timing belt slipped off and cams slipped and moved,etc.. That is just one example. Lots of little things crop when removing that much junk. Doing a timing belt in the bigger scheme of thing does not save you that much money. Your car goes 90k to 120k before you need to replace it. That is like every eight years. Learn to do thinks that come up more often like brakes/rotors/coolant/transmission fluid. Much less things go can wrong and there simple to figure you.
I would recommend shadowing a mechanic friend doing your timing belt or just pay a shop and be done with it.
Yes i have no plans at all doing the timing belt myself with the little experience i have. any how, i got to disable the 7.5a which resets my ECU and it still shoots the same 3 codes i first checked. which are listed as one of the first replies of this thread. about the o2 sensor.. ik i can buy it off the junk yard but how do i know if its working before buying it?
whoops wrong thread then, but i got codes p1381, p1509, and p0135. i have the repair manual to tell me what to do with the codes and one of these codes r the o2 sensor, just wanted to know how to get one in good working condition.
The codes don't tell you what specifically is malfunctioning. They just tell you that there's a problem in those three circuits. You need to do some electrical troubleshooting.
Start by checking whether those three sensors are plugged in or whether some sensor connectors have been swapped.
What engine and ECU do you have?

For the ECU, remove the passenger kick panel to see the label on your ECU. Post the full ECU code. The stock one should be a P2E.

yes, i for sure know the engine is a d16y7 because of the stamp. now the ecu is kinda difficult. i recall multiple codes on it? is there a specific one with a specific line or something around the code to indicate the indentification of the ecu?
Post pictures of the ECU labels you see.
