Default Light weight sunroof options?

So I have an em1 that I purchased as a rolling shell. The PO planned on welding a piece in place of the sunroof because race car. He never got to that point.

I found an em1 in a junkyard (who the eff junks a legit em1?!?) and raped it if a lot of parts, including the whole sunroof assembly. I never realized how heavy that piece was until I was dragging it through the yard! Holy sheeeet!!

So, does anyone make a lightweight insert? I'm thinking something that can be clipped into place, or removed completely and placed in the trunk in nice days. I would think saving ~65 lbs in a civic would be helpful for a lot of people who want to retain sunroofs

So, does anyone make something like this? Thanks guys

And you wouldn't be saving weight if you put it back in the trunk. FYI

It's not a practical idea at all. But here's the logical side use plexyglass(i think it's plexy) just as a "racecar" would use insted of glass for the windows....ya it's not cheap either.

Plexi not so much - it shards on impact and will cause more damage than shatter glass used in cars. The proper thicknesses to be "bullet resistant" would cause visual distortion on a curved surface like any car window. Lexan is what's used in race cars because it, well, doesn't break.

It's also stupidly expensive, next to impossible to work with if you don't have specialized tools, and generally not going to work for the OP due to shape, as well as size.

And your whole eight savings idea gets negated the minute you pile your car full of your boys.

I remember seeing years ago a website that sold a sunroof plug but it wasnt removeable. Not sure if it's still available.

EDIT: Found it http://www.lighterfaster.com/13101/

Nope, 1 fixed piece, sunroof is either closed, or the piece is removed completely. A fixed piece.

Have you ever carried a complete sunroof assembly when it's removed from the car? It's extremely heavy. 50-70 lbs, rough estimate. A well made plastic or fiberglass piece would weigh in at 10 lbs - 20 lbs max. Also, the piece doesn't have to be see-thru

Car is caged, gutted, and I'm planning on running some of the lightest recaros made. So no.

Why do I even try with you people. If you already know plastic or fiberglass would be lighter, why don't you just go make one? That would have completely removed any need for you to ask a question the answer to which you already know.

Aside from all the whining here. There was once a company who made a piece of carbon fiber that fit in there. Obviously its going to be expensive. No idea what the company was called, good luck checking google.

Word. Word.
Here's a quick Google search for people that seem to be incapable of searching on their own, NOR providing any relevant car details.

Here's one vendor in case certain people don't want to wade through the search results provided.

This took all of 30 seconds on Google people. No need to even post this question. Just wondering if there is a post for every piece of this build. Like one for the roll cage. One on how to gut the car. One on where to find those Recaros.

Well at least this topic has been beaten to death like a red-headed step-child and never has to be asked ever again.
