Default Revving sounds when decelerating...

Hello everyone,

I have a 1995 Civic CX. Lately I have been more and more aware of a weird sound coming from my engine bay when slowing down to a stop. I'll be slowing down rapidly and when I push the clutch in at about 15 mph and continue breaking I hear what sounds like the engine revving up and down rapidly. I do not have a tachometer so I have no way to tell if that is what's actually occurring though. As soon as I come to a complete halt it stops. No more revving(or whatever is humming), even idle, quiet car. I have cleaned both the IACV and the FITV and I have bled and refilled the coolant system. I am at a loss. At first I thought maybe it was something with the heating or air system, a fan or something making noise but that theory was quickly debunked with a test drive. The issue does not occur when the engine is ice cold but once it's been driven for 5 minutes or more it comes right back and consistently happens every time I slow down from speeds of say 25 mph or more.

Thank you for any help you can give!
Logan

Sounds like a bearing; something on the transmission side. How many miles are on the car? Is it an automatic or manual?

It is a 5 speed and there are 177k miles on the car. One thing they may help you analyze this is that if I am in first gear get the car moving again and then have to slow down immediately after(for example: if someone slams on their brakes) I will hear what sounds like the gear winding down.

You might try cleaning the throttle body and testing the TPS sensor.

Thanks for the advice! I'll look into the TPS sensor. When I removed the throttle body to get to the FITV I gave a pretty thorough cleaning to the throttle body while I had access to it so I don't think that's it. The TPS sensor definitely seems like it could be effecting the idle though so thanks for that tip!

Also make sure the throttle cable has a bit of slack to ensure that the throttle plate freely closes when you let your foot off the pedal.

Another sensor to test is the 2-wire ECT sensor under the distributor.

Did you bleed the cooling system like this:

I'll check my throttle cable this afternoon. The thing is though this almost doesn't seem like it's something in the engine. It's not a very loud noise though which makes the above mentioned transmission bearing seem like a possibility. It's like a pulsing almost but then as soon as I come to a stop there is one last little hum then silence.

With the engine idling in neutral, slowly push the clutch pedal to the floor and then slowly release it. Do this reproduce any noises that you recognize?

If you put your transmission in neutral prior to slowing down, does this eliminate the noise/problem?

Just went out for a drive to check. It does not. put it in neutral clutch all the way out just coasting to a stop. The noise still occurs. I know that very soon I will need a new clutch(mine is severely worn and is just now getting to the point it affects my driving). Could this be what is causing the noise? That could explain why the noise stops once the car has come to a complete halt...

I'm going to bump this because I never really found a solution and the problem is worsening...

Now it is much louder and the sound is also coming out of my exhaust rather than just the engine bay area. It also sometimes will continue to rev when sitting still at a stop light with the clutch in. Any ideas what this could be guys?

Replace you'r clutch and flywheel as I bet you've ground the disc down to the rivets and scraped up the flywheel.

I don't think my clutch is nearly that worn. It still grabs very hard and doesn't slip at all...

@grumblemarc I will try and get a video asap!

One thing that seems to have developed rather recently is a noise when I press in the clutch pedal. It sounds like a cord is being tightened or something. Clutch isn't any easier or harder to press though.
