Default 99 civic si w/ obd1 jdm b16a swap problems

so the stock b16a2 i had in my car crapped out a couple months ago and i finally got my jdm 92-95 b16a put in. it came with a jdm obd1 p30 ecu that i am using with a jumper. the problems i am have are as follows. since getting the car running the speedometer hasn't worked. i have tried the vss from my 98 civic with a manual ls swap and it still doesn't work. my vtec isn't working but i'm thinking that is due to the speedo fail. and since putting in the new motor the temp gauge hasn't got much above the bottom line on the normal range area. other than these issues the car runs solid until it should have vtec kick and then it falls on it's face. also the cluster has the CEL removed by a previous owner so i kinda have no idea what to look for so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Start off by replacing the CEL bulb. They're stupidly cheap at any parts store, and could save your engine from grenading again.

As for your temp gauge, first make sure the thermostat is working (might as well replace it), and make sure the temperature sending unit is functioning correctly. You could just pull the one off your old motor and install it, assuming your temperature gauge used to function properly.

the temp gauge always showed up as it should with the old motor. with the jdm motor there was an extra hose on the thermostat housing that went into the intake manifold. since using the a2 manifold it didn't have the place for the hose so i capped it off with a bolt and a hose clamp. could that cause the thermostat to possibly not work properly?

Highly doubt it. I also highly doubt the thermostat housing hose actually went into the IM - that would just pipe coolant into your intake, which would be bad on a whole new level.

if i remember correctly the hose was attached to the bottom of the throttle body when i removed the old intake manifold. but i'll try replacing the thermostat and see how that goes. any suggestions for the no speedo problem?

Ah, then it attached to the IACV.

I won't hazard a guess on the speedo. I know there's a difference in wiring for the tach for the 5G, 6G, and 6.5G, but I don't know the difference in the speedos. Once you fix the CEL bulb problem, see if it's throwing a speedo-related code.

Should have simply swapped the longblock (block and head only)
and retained the wiring, ECU, correct plumbing tract etc.

i went out and looked to clarify to see and the hose went from the thermostat housing to that pipe that is connected the the piping that goes from the valve cover to the intake tube and then it goes back to the coolant lines below the dizzy. it comes off the bottom of the throttle body on the a2 manifold.

when swapping out the motors i used the b16a2 intake manifold so the wiring from my si harness would match up. the only reason i'm using the jdm p30 is because without changing the oil pump to a usdm obd2 oil pump i have no CKF sensor which would throw a code on the stock si ecu. every other plug except the ckf plug is plugged into the motor.

fixed the speedo issue. turns out the connector on the wire harness was bad. cut it off and spliced on the one from the jdm harness my motor came with and it fixed that. so there's one problem down.

So bypass it. Then you won't throw a code.

I would try to sort out the plumbing....

If you are using the A2 intake manifold, you should also use the A2 thermostat housing to retain the original plumbing tract.

I assume you are using the original 2 wire IACV that came on the A2, make sure a 2-3 wire fix is needed or not to run that jumper.

well i finally got vtec working and everything seems fine with the motor now. it's running strong. feels way stronger than my stock b16a2 did. i appreciate the insight and help. now i'm hoping my b16a2's internals aren't damaged beyond a rebuild.
