What is this little can/filter in my 98 civic lx?

automatic transmission, there's a little black can that connects between the hose from the radiator to the transmission with a flow direction label. Is this some sort of transmission filter?

They don't come with a filter there, but it wouldn't be the first time I've seen someone add one.

Yup, someone has added an inline filter. A good move since the OE filter is inside the trans and requires an overhaul to replace.
